Thrilling Start to another Partlow Classic
Reviewed: 05-29-25
Rick Partlow has a way of running his characters through an absolute meat grinder to get them from where they start to where they need to be, and this story is no exception.
The world building comes at you fast, but is integrated into the story in very compelling ways as opposed to infodumps.
The tech levels are rule of cool meets practical, and the characters are well developed and unique.
as always, Garret Michael Brown does a fantastic job bringing Partlow's characters to life, giving his own special spin to the dialogue and action sequences, which are well written, and fit the story well.
I love that the resolution brings us to a larger story, and look forward to the next installment!

Story
Milo lives in a steel cave within a man-made mountain of steel and concrete. He spends his days repairing the machinery that keeps the habitat livable and tinkering with the prosthetics that help his twisted body move about through the small tunnels and air shafts that are his world. He's as much a piece of discarded machinery as the equipment he keeps running. An escaped lab experiment living in a hole. Given a chance at being someone different, will he become a hero and live in the sunlight?

i liked the premise of a sci-fi world in which the MC seeks escape into a fantasy game, and how both worlds influence each other. Milo is a smart and inventive character with some physical limitations that force him to think outside the "hero box."
good story, and of course, Garret Michael Brown does his usual fantastic job with the audio. looking forward to book 2!

Story
Sorry... Really? Thrust? Anyway, Danny Kendrick was a down-on-his luck performer who always struggled to find his place. He certainly never wanted to be a hero. He just hoped to earn a living doing what he loved. That all changes when he pisses off the wrong guy and gets sucked into a fantasy realm straight out of a Renaissance Fair. Getting used to a new world is tough. It's even tougher when you're surrounded by axe-wielding barbarians, super hot elf assassins, strange magic, and a jaded System that doesn't appear interested in being charged with yet another companion.

This follow up to book one was nothing short of OUTSTANDING! The PLOT thickens, we see further behind the curtains into the shadows of the powers that be and Eric's growing role in their machinations.
the narrator is so freaking good at the characters, and communicating the emotions involved.

Reality TV meets the System
Reviewed: 09-13-24
The transition to the new system governed world was handled in a way that is much better than most. the narrator does a good job with the multiple character voices required, even though sometimes a few sounded too similar to each other.
it's a good launching off into the new world story with all the development of skills and character you'd expect, and spicy enough interactions to keep it interesting without delving into high detailed smut.
the ending was satisfactory without being too much of a cliffhanger, and makes me want to read the next installment, so GUDONYA!

Xavier Collins was sitting in class when the System integrated Earth into the Greater Universe, where countless vast kingdoms, empires, and collectives battle for domination. He didn't know what choosing to be a Champion would entail. He just liked the sound of it. But when he's teleported to the aptly-named Tower of Champions, he must face challenges against those who have known about the System since birth.

The narrator is good, but the language is clearly written in British English, yet he chose mostly American accents even though he is capable of British.
the story is good, Made me want to keep going, but I didn't like the cliffhanger ending in the middle of a level.

An amazing world building experience!
Reviewed: 08-01-24
Solid characters, a driving story with increasing stakes, and a massive and complex world built on the ashes of our old one. Science and magic in the same system, hints at future dangers to be revealed, and a narrator that made me smile and cheer as much as an R.C. Bray mega series. This story has it all and if it doesn't move you, you'd best check yourself for a pulse!
absolutely cannot wait for book 2!

Captain Kynan Esprit served six years in the Marines, then four more in the Secret Service. Both ended in disgrace. Jobless, his former commander recommends him to weapons manufacturer Whit Lasette, who doesn’t care if Kynan’s moral compass sometimes conflicts with orders from above. Whit admires the captain’s uncompromising valor and hires Ky to protect his adult daughter, Reina, while he campaigns for the US presidency.

Good action, POV changes distracting
Reviewed: 07-26-24
Overall it's a great story, go too much romance for my taste, but that's okay It takes all kinds. The one critique I have is the multiple POV changes in successive chapters. I find that distracting and bothersome. people like it I'm just one that doesn't but that doesn't take away from the overall power of the story which was very good. The narrator was amazing as always because it's Peter. He akways does an outstanding job and loads every character with emotion you can never go wrong Peter as your narrator.

Lots of intrigue!
Reviewed: 07-13-24
I had trouble liking the main character at first because he was such a slime during his earthly life. But after he transferred to the new world and learn compassion and learned a few things about what really matters, he became more likable.
overall it's a good progression story with lots of political intrigue and massive amounts of world-building that was very well done.
The pauses for leveling up and stats allocation take me out of the story a little bit but that's the same for all lit RPG stories for me. The action adventure and intrigue of this story overall helped take the sting out of the leveling up breakdowns.
The narrator does a good job overall giving different voices to the characters, which can be very hard to do especially when you're doing multiple children's voices.
I am looking forward to the next installment!

Not overwhelming stats!
Reviewed: 06-28-24
one thing that LitRPG does to me with pages of stats is pull me out of the story. This book contains a great story, without the stats becoming too inteusive somehow. The narrator does an excellent job inhabiting all the characters, both real and NPC alike. There are other elements I can't talk about without spoilers, but suffice to say that there are some twists here that I fully enjoyed. GREAT LISTEN.
