Story
East House is the oldest and least desirable dorm on campus, but it has a draw for lonely university freshman Aleeza Kassam: Jay Hoque, the hot and broody student who vanished from East House five months ago without a trace. It’s irresistible to an aspiring investigative journalist like Aleeza. But when she starts receiving texts from Jay, the mystery takes an unexpected turn. To put it mildly.

This was a great audiobook. It had all my favorite elements: Mystery, time paradox, well developed characters, story, and dialogue and good narration. Proof that you can have a great book without foul language and explicit violence or sex scenes. Well done!!

I was REALLY enjoying the story and the production was great - until the end of the story utterly ruined it.
Doesn’t anyone know how to create a good story without dragging wokeness and politics into it? 😡

Great story ruined by author's politics
Reviewed: 07-13-23
I was thoroughly enjoying this story until the last few chapters. I was initially mildly disappointed that this wonderful story was turning into a climate change platform, but the last two chapters was literally nothing but spewing climate change political views. Why ruin what was a well told story just to tout political views?
If the author had left off at a soft sell of climate change concerns, I would have given this at least 4 stars. Only the stellar performance saved it from being a 1 or 2 star review.
Bottom line: Stories are supposed to entertain, not preach. And if you want to Aesopize a story (which is perfectly acceptable) make it subtle, not like a club over the head. I certainly won't be listening to any other stories from this author.

Newly widowed dad Sebastian Dorner was unraveling at the edges - until his son’s teacher, Via DeRosa, threw him a lifeline. Now two years later, they reconnect at Matty’s new school, and an inconvenient but unmistakable jolt of attraction crackles between them. But why does the first person to spark with Sebastian in years have to be a millennial? Is 20-something Via really too young for him or does 40-something Sebastian just feel too damn old?

What’s with all the F bombs 😡
Reviewed: 06-04-23
I’ve always enjoyed Cara Bastone’s stories because not only are they generally charming rom/coms, but they’re usually PG.
I’m very disappointed with all the F bombs - not just in one or two places that might be appropriate - but all throughout the book (is multiple usage of “for f$&@ sake” really necessary?)
That is bad enough, but there are other crude elements that IMO ruin the story. Rom-coms aren’t supposed to be crude and/or explicit.
I hope this “experiment gone bad” won’t be repeated or I’ll not read another book by the author.

Story
Clare and Henry have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was 36. They were married when Clare was 23 and Henry was 31. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his life, past and future. His disappearances are spontaneous, his experiences unpredictable, alternately harrowing and amusing.

Great story ruined by author's choices
Reviewed: 03-27-23
I love the concept of the story, but there were two elements that made it far less enjoyable.
1) This is supposed to be a love story, right? So then why would the author choose to use the most vulgar terms when referring to intimate scenes and things more intimate in nature? As much as I love the story, I would not have started listening to it had I known about this serious flaw.
2) What is the point of quoting lengthy poems/lyrics in different languages without any attempt to clue the reader in on what the poem/song was about? Not a deal breaker like the vulgar terminology mentioned above, but it was annoying to be left out of what was supposed to be communicated.

Premise of story impossible
Reviewed: 10-03-22
If a story is well told, I can overlook a few minor inconsistencies. For the right story, I might even forgive a hole in a plot that you could drive a truck through, but the so called clues that led to the “big truth” were ridiculous and the premise of the story was not just not believable but absolutely impossible.

Paint your toes. Pick up the wrong coffee and bagel order. Drive from Brooklyn to Jersey in traffic so slow you want to tear your hair out. It’s amazing all the useless things I can accomplish while on hold for three hours with customer service. Three hours when I should be getting the Date-in-a-Box website ready to launch at the big business expo in a few days. Except my shiny new website is glitching, and my inner rage-monster is ready to scorch some earth...when he finally picks up. Not the robot voice I expected but a real live human named Kal.
