Story
Radio-talk-show host Eve Reilly is used to backlash from her pot-stirring on-air commentary and interviews. But now it seems a disgruntled listener is resorting to more than angry words to express their displeasure. When a suspicious package arrives on her doorstep, Eve turns to law enforcement for help. Police Detective Brent Lange can't find any evidence to link the string of unsettling incidents that follows, but he's convinced they're connected. As the harassment grows more menacing, it becomes clear someone wants Eves voice silenced - permanently.

More ‘right to life’ propaganda than mystery or romance. If I’d known how polarized this book was I would never have waisted a credit. Since I couldn’t return it I struggled through to the end hoping it might get better. It didn’t.

Story
At first glance, Jellicoe Close seems to be a perfect suburban street – well-kept houses with pristine lawns, neighbours chatting over garden fences, children playing together. But there are dark secrets behind the neat front doors, hidden dangers that include a ruthless criminal who will stop at nothing. It’s up to DS Maeve Kerrigan and DI Josh Derwent to uncover the truth. Posing as a couple, they move into the Close, blurring the lines between professional and personal as never before.

Not my favourite

I have listened to all other books in this series, anxiously awaiting the latest release. Unfortunately this book was a disappointment. The plot was slow to develop and not as engaging as other books in the series. The narration is particularly disappointing. While the narrator would be okay for other books she fell far short for Maeve Karrigan. Instead of the young, energetic voice we’ve come to expect of Maeve this narration came across as a middle aged, jaded and somewhat bored.

Story
Want to know what happens to a man who barely claws his way out of a tragedy, only to fall right into the arms of the one girl in the world he can never have? Another tragedy, that's what. When I was six years old, my father made a choice that altered the course of my entire life. Because of what he did, the only girl I ever loved became the only girl I couldn’t have. In a lot of ways, I did have her; I had her first steps, her first words, her first smile. I had her milestones, her heartbreaks, her dreams.

Story
Emily Emerson is used to being alone; her dad ran out on the family when she was just a kid, her mom died when she was 17, and her beloved grandmother has just passed away as well. But when she's laid off from her reporting job, she finds herself completely at sea until the day she receives a beautiful, haunting painting of a young woman standing at the edge of a sugarcane field under a violet sky. That woman is recognizable as her grandmother - and the painting arrived with no identification other than a handwritten note saying, "He always loved her."

Painful! Could not finish.

The premise of the storyline was intriguing but the book fell far short. The heroine was imbued with little substance other than her self importance and the travails wealth and privilege. The supporting characters were stereotypical and added little to story. The context of women’s contributions to World War 1 was poorly developed and this group came across as immature, more interested in infighting than contributing to the war effort. I stayed with it for 5+ hours and finally gave up.

I wasn’t sure initially if I was going to enjoy this listen; it took me a chapter or two to engage with the story. From there on I had a hard time putting it down and ended up finishing it within a day. So many twists and turns, it kept me guessing to the end.

The narration is painful and the story contrived and predictable. I stayed with it for over an hour hoping it would improve but finally gave up. I’m puzzled by all the positive reviews. I usually find 4-5 star reviews a good indication that I too will enjoy a book. Unfortunately, not this time.
