Story
From Charlaine Harris, the best-selling author who created Sookie Stackhouse and her world of Bon Temps, Louisiana, comes a darker locale - populated by more strangers than friends. But then, that's how the locals prefer it. Welcome to Midnight, Texas, a town with many boarded-up windows and few full-time inhabitants, located at the crossing of Witch Light Road and Davy Road. It' s a pretty standard dried-up western town.

Not Quite Like The TV Series
Reviewed: 12-08-24
Listening to this reminded me of when I read The Shining after seeing the movie. The book and the movie basically had the same base, but then became two separate tales. The same with this book and the TV series. I think the TV series accelerated the story and added more violence and supernatural events to basically keep the audience coming back. I had recently rewatched the first season when I discovered the books the series was made from were on sale so I bought all three. Some reviews complain about the story dragging a bit in the beginning, but unlike the series we get a deeper look into some of the primary characters. So naturally that takes time.
I’m looking foreword to hearing the other two books. I never realized that the streaming channel I was watching the series on only had it for a month or I would have done some binge watching to see the last season when they switched stations

Good But Different

On one hand it was interesting because it stepped way back in time when even Hurley was still alive. It also goes back to Mitch fighting in the war instead of all the other missions with drug cartels and such.
What I had trouble with was how this author spent more time explaining so many things like this was a real event Mitch was in. I’m used to Mitch getting into the action much more with less explaining about so many procedures. I hope in the future this author stays in the past, but makes Mitch more active throughout the book like I’m used to

Across the country women are being murdered by a killer who leaves no evidence, no fatal wounds, no signs of struggle, and no clues to a motive. They are, truly, perfect crimes. In fact, the only thing that links the victims is the man they all knew: Jack Reacher.

I still have a couple hours left, but I could not take the readers performance when it came to dialogue. He should stick to non fiction that does not require dialogue between different characters. His voices range from sort of bearable to ARRRRGH! That’s horrible. I was just getting into the plot too, but that’s all I could stand.

Good Thing Cort Is A Fictional Character
Reviewed: 05-02-24
Otherwise Mark Greaney would get clipped. I think I own every Grey Man audiobook. Time after time Mark puts Cort through grueling torture in one manner or another. In fact I’m thinking there’s probably a Steven King book where a character shows up to give payback to and author. Mark would be toast.
As for this book it begs the question “Where does he go from here?” So many loose ends were tied up so what happens next needs some different main players. Hahah! Maybe he’ll take Mark along as a shield.

US Marshal Arliss Cutter is a born tracker. Raised in the swamplands of Florida, he honed his skills in the military, fought in the Middle East, and worked three field positions for Marshal Services. When it comes to tracking someone down - or taking someone out - Cutter's the best. But his newest assignment is taking him out of his comfort zone to southeast Alaska. Cold, dark, uninhabited forests that are often shrouded in fog. And it's the kind of case that makes his blood run cold.

Although the story was good the readers style really isn’t made for characters. He’d do great on non fiction documentaries or such. I had a hard time sticking with the story and listened to two other books to get a break from his reading.

It Is Different, But Good
Reviewed: 11-04-23
I too was going to critique the narration, but after reading some of the others I decided to point out that chances are there will be a change of narrators on any long running series. I’m a long time Audiobook listener and have had this happen on a few series I really like. Most of the time the new reader actually does a good job, but you’ve become used to your lead character sounding the same every book. Suddenly it’s kind of disorienting to hear a new voice. It’s tough to do at first, but I try to pretend it’s my first time hearing this series and try to concentrate on the story and action.
The story opens with a John Sanford classic opening that walks us through a scene where murder or murders are about to happen in some grizzly manner, and this one sure did get grizzly. Once again Lucas and Virgil are both back in Minnesota where I personally like them to be working since I live up here and often know where they are at. There’s something about that that personalizes his stories for me. Plus I think many fans think of Virgil and Lucas as the “A Team” investigators the same way the primary players did.
Another thing I like about Sanford’s stories is his use of the psychology going on in several of the prime characters…And sometimes either Virgil, Lucas, or both. You really feel there’s some authenticity in the story telling. This story had some deep dives in three primary characters who had several problems. Two had a lifetime of defects, but one was affected by what happened to here that changed her forever…
When I read several negative reviews I mostly read “I hate this because it’s different than what I’m used to.” The original reader died so you either learn to adjust or you will just miss out.

What Do You Want? A One Trick Pony?
Reviewed: 04-30-23
The first thing I saw here was several really terrible reviews. From the sounds of many of them they are Sanford fans who hate change. Or who hate anything that suggests there’s a progressive point of view in the story…As in a young woman who can be as lethal as her father if she needs to be. Of course she’s going to be rough around the edges at times, but that’s because she’s tough, smart, and committed.
I’ve listened to practically everything John Sanford has written. He isn’t afraid to try new ideas that are out of his expertise (Street crime). He’s even done science fiction with some help. That’s why I was impressed at his going into the world of really talented hackers. I’m sure he had help getting things right in that world because there’s a lot of people who’d know if he had no idea what he was writing about.
Personally I like Letti better now than when she appeared as a teen in a Davenport story. If she wasn’t tough and willing to go after whatever needed to be done, then she’d be a female Joe Friday…How exciting would that be?

The Gray Man is on a simple mission when he sees a ghost: the long-dead terrorist, but he's remarkably energetic for a dead man. A decade of time hasn't changed the Gray Man. I know it’s wrong, but part of the fun in this one is how poor Walt kept getting the snot knocked out of him in different degrees (Including dog teeth in the butt). I think the author really likes having fun with Walt having so many things happen to him.
I’ve enjoyed all the Longmire books I’ve heard so far (I think I have them all now). In these times of so much nasty news out there I find Longmire books to be a nice escape.
