I rarely bother to review, but this is something special. If anyone had told me that I would be excited each night to listen to someone read a cookbook to me... It's obviously much more than recipes. I found this to be amusing, sad, and as beautiful as any poem-- but more useful.

The story is a real stretch. If the narrator hadn't done such a good job with it I never would have bothered finishing it.

The story may be a bit better or a bit worse than the 3 stars I gave it. The narrator made such a mess of it who can say? More of a bad reading than a performance. Nearly every male had the same silly gravelly voice. Conversations between two males were particularly difficult to decipher.

I thought this was very well performed, but the story almost seemed like something being made up as it went. I'm not a prude, but parts of this just seemed crass.

Ann Dowd's performance is so much stronger than the rest I often felt very impatient with the others, and I found Atwood's reading of the chapter names so jarring it pulled me out of the story. For me one or two strong narrators rather than half a dozen of varying levels of talent would have made this much more entertaining and memorable.

The history is interesting, but I didn't think this was well-written or well-performed. Much too wordy (it even includes a flowery description of the sunrise after a rape). It just drags on and on. And on. And on. I only finished it because I'm out of credits at the moment.

The narrator did a decent job until she had to voice a male (other than Rachel's lover), or a child. Every one of those sounded exactly like Speed Racer. The story was also irritating. What originally sounded like an interesting concept quickly became very uninteresting, because Rachel is a complete bore. If you had all the time in the world, and knew you would have to make a life for yourself over and over, wouldn't you at least keep up on current events? Learn nearly every language? Some skills? Become a better parent? She loves her countless children, but never seems to gain or impart any wisdom. Mostly she breeds and whines.

Great performance and story! Reminded me of some old radio performances I've heard in the past where you can picture every scene.

I thought this was exceptionally well done! It can be difficult for me to stay focused on a book through the entire thing, but the story was great and Catherine's voice was fantastic. I haven't enjoyed a work of fiction this much since All the Light We Cannot See.
