Story
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

Narrators we’re good. Loved the design details of story. I’d categorize this as young adult fantasy reading; sex scenes robotic. Just sayin. . .

Story
Of course, I’m not going to murder her in the night. I need my laptop back first. That’s the whole point of making friends with Emily Harper, author of the hugely successful novel Diary of an Octopus. So I could get into her apartment and take back what’s mine. Emily doesn’t know who I really am. She thinks I’m her biggest fan, her new best friend who happens to need a place to stay for a few days. She doesn’t realize the laptop she found—and took—from a busy airport almost two years ago was mine. I don’t care about the laptop, just what's on it: my diary.

Story
Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss, and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them, in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul, they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation.

In The Signature of All Things, Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction, inserting her inimitable voice into an enthralling story of love, adventure and discovery. Spanning much of the 18th and 19th centuries, the novel follows the fortunes of the extraordinary Whittaker family as led by the enterprising Henry Whittaker - a poor-born Englishman who makes a great fortune in the South American quinine trade, eventually becoming the richest man in Philadelphia.

An enthralling story about love, motherhood and choosing who you belong to in the world by best-selling author Kimberley Freeman. 1874: only days before she is to leave the foundling home where she grew up, Agnes Resolute discovers that, as a baby, she had been abandoned with a small token of her mother: a unicorn button. Agnes always believed her mother had been too poor to keep her, but after working as a laundress in the home she recognises the button as belonging the daughter of a local noble.

Jodi Picoult, master storytelling once again.
Reviewed: 08-25-20
This story, like every other Jodi Picoult story, was masterfully written and researched. After listening to Jodi’s comments at the end, I gave the “performance” a higher rating. I agree with the other reviewers about the singing. I fast forwarded during every performance. I would have preferred maybe a beginning and ending song, eliminating ALL the middle ones. I admire Jodi for writing the lyrics, though, and for her work helping children. Wherever does she find the time. I enjoyed her reference to some of my favorite artists, Leonard Cohen and Eva Cassidy.
In the future, I would love to hear an interview with Jodi at the end of her books, talking about her research on all of these sensitive topics.

Being the middle child has its ups and downs. But for Grace, an only child who was adopted at birth, discovering that she is a middle child is a different ride altogether. After putting her own baby up for adoption, she goes looking for her biological family, including: Maya, her loudmouthed younger bio sister, who has a lot to say about their newfound family ties. And Joaquin, their stoic older bio brother, who has no interest in bonding over their shared biological mother.

A Read for All Ages

Though this is a young adult genre, this 70 year old Reader loved it, sans the dialog between the teenagers. I not only liked but related to each character (parents and teenagers). The narrator could have done a better job on the male voices (not all of us have the gift).
This book especially touched me since I was adopted infant in 1948 who recently met my siblings and biological father at age 70.
I highly recommend. Thank you, Robin Benway, for this gift!
