Story
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

Story
The author whose boundless imagination and storytelling powers have redefined the horror genre, from 1974’s Carrie to his new epic Under the Dome, reflects on the very nature of terror—what scares us and why—in films (both cheesy and choice), television and radio, and, of course, the horror novel, past and present.

Jonas kills people...with his mind. He reaches out, focuses for a moment, and feels a snap of pain between his eyes. Then his target falls over dead: a hole in the center of their brains. The cause of death is unknown to all aside from Jonas, and his lone companion, Bubbles, a sarcastic AI with aspirations to be more human, or a serial killer. One of the two. Maybe both. Jonas calls his ability...mind bullet.

Story
The tragic story of Susan Powell and her murdered boys, Charlie and Braden, is the only case that rivals the Jon Benet Ramsey saga in the annals of true crime. When the pretty, blonde Utah mother went missing in December of 2009 the media was swept up in the story - with lenses and microphones trained on Susan's husband, Josh. He said he had no idea what happened to his young wife, and that he and the boys had been camping in the middle of a snowstorm.

Campy horror & humor
Reviewed: 02-29-16
What did you love best about Deceitful Moon?
I liked Rick Murcer's writing style. His work is packed with similes that are often a humorous relief from the horror. I don't know if he intended for me to laugh so much amid the mystery and bloodshed but I did. Many references to the previous book made me want to read it and see if it was the same. My favorite line: "He cradled Louise in his arms, putting his hand on the hole in her chest, trying to stem the flow that wouldn't take STOP for an answer." The first time I heard it I laughed out loud. The second time I thought it was brilliant.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I didn't really have a favorite character. I appreciated that the characters, except for the evil Dr. Argyle, were not two dimensional. I liked the way Manny Williams and his partner Sophie Lee bantered back and forth. It will be interesting to find out what happens to Dr. Argyle when the series ends.
What does DJ Holte bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
DJ Holte brings sparkle and color to the story. He gives all the characters a distinctive voice, even the women. His rendition of the villainous Dr. Fredrick Argyle is a nasty maniacal voice that will give you the creeps.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, there was too much graphic violence for that.
Any additional comments?
Horror isn't my favorite genre but when DJ Holte offered Deceitful Moon to me for an honest review, I jumped at the chance to hear one of my favorite narrators again.

Sheila is certain America's dynasties will destroy the country, but her nascent group of academic colleagues has failed to persuade the government and the people of the need for change. These revolutionaries call themselves Prime Heuristic. Their influence on government is small compared to that of powerful families like the houses of Daco, Harrington, Maddox, and Tafuri. Sheila and her colleagues monitor the fight for economic dominance between these four houses and America's other dynasties.

Too short but well performed
Reviewed: 10-27-15
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Maybe. I would tell a friend that this is a near-future political thriller with romance and erotica included but there was no hook that made me want to listen to the second installment. It seemed to be three scenes leading to an erotic encounter. The first scene takes place on a talk show called Holding Court with people asking questions related to employment. The panel consists of Sheila, a professor of labor economics, who wants to warn America of the modern feudal system that will surely destroy democracy. Jasira is a journalist and expert on the New Rule that is creating the feudal system. She may or may not be Sheila's ally. In the second scene Sheila and Jasira share a meal and their attraction to one another seems to be headed toward romance until Jasira does something to make Sheila suspicious. The erotic last scene (aptly named Snacks at Midnight) happens three days later. Very steamy! The director included some well place sound effects such as laughter, car horns and music throughout the episode. I think a well placed moan or two would have made the sex scene even steamier.
Would you ever listen to anything by Henry Sullivan again?
I wouldn't mind reading the series to see what happens with Sheila and Jasira.
What about the narrators’s performance did you like?
They all performed very well. I especially liked Jasira's voice and Sheila's Tennessee accent. I liked the voice of the main narrator. Actually the whole cast was great.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
I would watch if it made it to Netflix.
Any additional comments?
I received a copy of this audio book at no cost in exchange for an honest review. Would I be eager to hear the next installment if there was more political thriller content? Or more romance/erotica? I'm just not sure.

I loved Harley
Reviewed: 10-09-14
What made the experience of listening to The Boots My Mother Gave Me the most enjoyable?
I really liked the main character, Harley LeBeau. She has determination and courage and despite an abusive father and dysfunctional family like, she knew what she wanted and went after it. She is proof that no one has to let a difficult childhood and dysfunctional family be the excuse not to live life to the fullest.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Harley LeBeau, of course. If I could go back and relive my 20s, I would like to leave home and live for myself like Harley did.
Which scene was your favorite?
Well, (blush) Harley's first sexual experience. It was sweet, tender and sensual and transported me back in time.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Yes, when Harley graduated high school and was leaving town, her father gave her a guitar.
Any additional comments?
No matter what the situation, Harley chose herself and her life. I think her story can be an inspiration to any woman, especially those who have suffered the same kind of abusive family situation.

Paints a grim picture
Reviewed: 09-10-14
Is there anything you would change about this book?
It is way too long.
Would you recommend Golden Handcuffs to your friends? Why or why not?
I would recommend it to any young person looking to get a position in banking or any highly paid corporate position but can't think of any of my friends I would recommend it to.
What three words best describe Anne Day-Jones’s voice?
British, pleasant and well-paced.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
I'd watch if it ever came on Netflix just to see how it was different from the book.
Any additional comments?
The book truly paints a grim picture of the experience of working in the banking industry. The horrible greed and deceit fostered by competition to climb the corporate ladder would make it hard to trust co-workers. Any young person who wants to go into banking should read (or listen) so they'd know that the prestige of the position and the financial rewards may not be worth the abuse they would face.

What did you love best about Going Shogun?
Listening to Going Shogun was the most fun I've had in ages. I love Ernie Lindsey's sense of humor and his ability to tell a story so vividly I feel as if I'm there. I was totally entertained by the adventures of Chris (aka Brick) and his best friend Forklift and their world dominated by a controlling government agency called The Board.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Going Shogun?
When Chris (aka Brick) realized what was really important in his life. It wasn't social status.
Which character – as performed by DJ Holte – was your favorite?
I liked all the characters. DJ Holte is so talented he makes them all come alive. Maybe Forklift, with his invented slang was my favorite.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Comic joy ride.
Any additional comments?
I highly recommend Going Shogun with a warning: Every audiobook you listen to afterward will seem mighty dull.
