Story
Lady Philippa Marbury is...odd. The brilliant, bespectacled daughter of a double marquess cares more for books than balls, for science than the season, and for laboratories than love. She's looking forward to marrying her simple fiancé and living out her days quietly with her dogs and her scientific experiments. But before that, Pippa has two weeks to experience all the rest - 14 days to research the exciting parts of life. It's not much time, and to do it right she needs a guide familiar with London's darker corners.

I love Pippa and Cross! The heroine is very feminist. Sarah MacLean books always have fiery scenes and this one does not disappoint! This book has one of my favorite hot & heavy scenes EVER.

Everything changes when she receives a mysterious message: You’re a Denton. You belong on Starfall Point. Once you’re here, I’ll tell you everything you need to know. When Riley arrives on the island, she learns her aunt has left her a historic mansion brimming with haunted antiques. Turns out, that’s not the only thing she’s inherited. Riley also hails from a long line of witches.

A decent beach “read” but low effort narration
Reviewed: 07-09-23
The story is okay, pretty predictable but fun and definitely made me laugh out loud a few times. The narration is where the book struggles. The female narrator gives the same voice to ALL the female characters except the old ladies, and even they all have the same “old lady” voice. It’s confusing when there is a lot of dialogue between the main three friends. I was also not a fan of the male narrator’s voice, but he at least had actual different voices for the different characters.

Story
To be clear: Beatrice, Duchess of Kesgrave, does not think every dead person in London is the victim of a sinister plot. The city is large, after all, and some of its inhabitants had to have died from innocent causes. Like Peter Huzza, who was killed in a horrifying steam engine accident. It is shocking, yes, the way his body was torn apart by the explosion of his very own machine, but not entirely surprising. High-pressure steam is notoriously dangerous to harness. There is no reason to suspect foul play. Nope, none at all.

Story
Twenty-six-year-old Beatrice Hyde-Clare is far too shy to investigate the suspicious death of a fellow guest in the Lake District. A spinster who lives on the sufferance of her relatives, she would certainly not presume to search the rooms of her host's son and his friend looking for evidence. Reared in the twin virtues of deference and docility, she would absolutely never think to question the imperious Duke of Kesgrave about anything, let alone how he chose to represent the incident to the local constable. And yet that's exactly what she does.

BHC is my favorite series!
Reviewed: 07-18-21
This is the first book in one of my favorite series. The main character is clever and determined. Lynn Messina expertly walks the line of a supporting cast that is frivolous and ridiculous without descending into farce, leading to hilarious dialogue. The solution to the mystery is not obvious, but there are enough breadcrumbs that a reader/listener who is paying attention can figure out the answer before the classic reveal scene. An excellent first book in an excellent series.
The narrator is also great, and Kesgrave’s voice is one of my favorites. I will often put the book on .7 speed and put on a Kesgrave dialogue chapter to fall asleep to.

London 1814... Drake, Duke of Manchester is searching the Marriage Mart for a perfect bride. He wants a woman who is poised, sophisticated, and worthy of the title Duchess. But most of all, he wants a woman who does not want the useless emotion of love. Socially awkward Miss Penelope Clayton isn't meant for marriage. A serious botanist, she has no desire to wed, so being forced by her guardian to participate in the Season to find a husband is torture.

Okay story, bad voices.
Reviewed: 03-31-21
The overall story is alright, but the author does not bother to go into much detail at all about the science that the heroine is supposedly so passionate about. She discovers a previously unclassified plant and we don’t even get a name!
The narrator is not good. The voice of the male protagonist is nasally and annoying even though the text says it’s deep and sensual, and she can’t do a good American accent without sounding like a bad anime dub. I would not have listened to this if it weren’t free and will not be continuing the series, even though I am interested in some of the secondary characters.
