About this listen
Twenty-six-year-old Beatrice Hyde-Clare is far too shy to investigate the suspicious death of a fellow guest in the Lake District. A spinster who lives on the sufferance of her relatives, she would certainly not presume to search the rooms of her host's son and his friend looking for evidence. Reared in the twin virtues of deference and docility, she would absolutely never think to question the imperious Duke of Kesgrave about anything, let alone how he chose to represent the incident to the local constable.
And yet when she stumbles upon the bludgeoned corpse of poor Mr. Otley in the deserted library of the Skeffingtons' country house, that's exactly what she does.

Story
The happily married Mr. Knightley and Emma are throwing a party at their country estate, bringing together distant relatives and new acquaintances—characters beloved by Jane Austen fans. Definitely not invited is Mr. Wickham, whose latest financial scheme has netted him an even broader array of enemies. As tempers flare and secrets are revealed, it’s clear that everyone would be happier if Mr. Wickham got his comeuppance. Yet they’re all shocked when Wickham turns up murdered—except, of course, for the killer hidden in their midst.

Story
As the London Daily Gazette’s popular gossip columnist, she is extremely adept at sneaking into houses, assuming disguises and overseeing a vast network of spies to ensure she stays abreast of the beau monde’s comings and goings. If it sometimes seems as though she was hiding behind the settee during a particularly fierce quarrel between a husband and his wife, it’s most likely because she was hiding behind the settee during their fierce quarrel.

Miss Emma Harlow hasn't earned the reputation as a hoyden for nothing, so when the duke of Trent discovers her in his conservatory stealing one of his orchids, he isn't surprised - charmed, delighted and puzzled, yes, but not surprised. It is Emma who is amazed. But her vexation doesn't last long. For Emma is a practical young lady with a mission: to end her dear sister Lavinia's engagement to the villainous (and dreadfully dull!) Sir Waldo Windbourne, and she thinks that the famous libertine is just the man for the job.

The Earl of Wrexford possesses a brilliant scientific mind, but boredom and pride lead him to reckless behavior. He does not suffer fools gladly. So when pompous, pious Reverend Josiah Holworthy publicly condemns him for debauchery, Wrexford unsheathes his rapier-sharp wit and strikes back. As their war of words escalates, London's most popular satirical cartoonist, A. J. Quill, skewers them both.

This is Reaper speaking. So begins an anonymous letter published in a Utah newspaper after a young couple is viciously murdered. Tooele County sheriff Elizabeth Gray leads the investigation into the double homicide, which is eerily reminiscent of a string of brutal killings years ago. When the letter leads detectives to yet another body, Gray calls on an old friend for help.

Entertaining historical cozy
Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.
This is the first book in the Beatrice Hyde-Clare Mysteries and what a great way to start. It is a standalone story with a complete ending [no cliffhanger]. Bea is an orphaned and has been taken in by her aunt and uncle - who tolerate her. Bea is a 26 year old spinster and is frequently reminded of her failings by her aunt. However, while at a houseparty with her cousin, aunt and uncle, Bea stumbles over a dead body in the library. She also stumbles into a very handsome Duke. When the death is declared a suicide, Bea can stay silent no more and finds her voice to demand justice. She starts an investigation and works with the Duke to uncover the perpetrator.
What I really liked about this story was Bea's wit and her change from a wallflower to a more assertive woman. There is a lot of humor in this book - from Aunt Vera's ettiquette lessons to Bea's own inward commentary about the situation. Of course there were sparks between the Duke and Bea, which leaves open the possibility for romance in the next books.
The narrator, Jill Smith, was a perfect fit for this regency cozy. She has a very charming British accent and was able to convincingly portray Bea from the timid wallflower to a woman who speaks her mind. Her interpretation of Aunt Vera was completely enjoyable.
A Real Delight
