Story
There's a saying in Barstow, California, a decaying city in the scorching Mojave desert . . . The Interstate here only goes in one direction: Away. But it's the only place where ex-LAPD detective Beth McDade, after a staggering fall from grace, could get another badge . . . and a shot at redemption. Over a century ago, and just a few miles further into the bleak landscape, a desperate stranger ended up in Calico, a struggling mining town, also hoping for a second chance.

Loved the backdrop of the 60’s era and JFK presidency. The arc of the story weaves many of the hopeful changes that were underway throughout the time around the assassination event.

Malcolm Evans, the Beatles’ long-time roadie, personal assistant, and devoted friend, was an invaluable member of the band’s inner circle. A towering figure in horn-rimmed glasses, Evans loomed large in the Beatles’ story, contributing at times as a performer and sometime lyricist, while struggling mightily to protect his beloved “boys.” He was there for the whole of the group’s remarkable, unparalleled story: from the Shea Stadium triumph through the creation of the timeless cover art for Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and the famous Let It Be rooftop concert.

Riveting, well written and yet another masterpiece by Ken Womack. In this case, Mal Evans' son, Gary, also participates not only in the audio intro but throughout the untold story as a key source. Having read many tomes about the Fab Four and always hunting for additional details, I feel this entire documentation is just that...full of unearthed details or confirmations of others. It moved me to purchase physical copies as holiday gifts...and of course one more for me. Simple cannot get enough of this incredibly important and nearly lost compliment to all else that's ever been written or reported. Mal deserves nothing less. Cannot wait until volume two!

Story
Leigh Collier has worked hard to build what looks like a normal life. She has a good job as a defense attorney, a daughter doing well in school, and even her divorce is relatively civilized - her life is just as unremarkable as she’d always hoped it would be. But Leigh’s ordinary life masks a childhood that was far from average...a childhood tarnished by secrets, broken by betrayal, and finally torn apart by a devastating act of violence.

Story
While most successful sidemen are lucky to spend a decade in the music business, multi-instrumentalist Mark Rivera is working on his fifth. Rivera has shared the stage with some of Rock 'n' Roll's greatest performers, including John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Elton John, Simon & Garfunkel, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Tony Bennett, Sheila E., Joe Walsh, Hall & Oates, and Peter Gabriel. How does he do it while avoiding the typical pitfalls—falling out of favor with the band, burnout, depression?

Grounded, Authentic, Without Ego, Insightful
Reviewed: 08-04-23
Mark's story, his career as a Sideman, was everything unexpected from a "rock star." There was no ego, just the opposite. Laid bare, this sideman was a family man first, against all R&R odds. His delivery is one that is grounded, without fanfare, even one that touts how lucky he's been having worked with many of the greats - from Lennon, Joel, Jagger, Starr to many more. I truly didn't expect to stick with a story being a bit lucky myself in the music industry. Yet, Mark is instantly someone you want to be friends with, work with, rely upon and support. Kudos to a Sideman that can add author to his stellar career. To me, he's no longer a sideman, but a star in his own right - I'm hunting for his latest vinyl release as I submit this review. Looking forward to all that lies ahead...

Having entertained the idea for years, and even offered a few questionable opportunities ("It's a piece of cake! What a Joy to Read - Beyond Nirvana!
Reviewed: 12-31-21
I wasn't yet the fan I am now of Dave Grohl after reading this humble, humorous, and captivating tome. It was one of the few times I slowed down the audio presentation to real time so as not to miss a single word. Many in Grohl's sphere are the artists I grew up with a revered. Of course, seeing Grohl participate in many events with my favorite artists, too, made me curious as to who he was, with a much deeper dive than Nirvana alone. This book does it - does it all - and more. Truely the Storyteller, I am about to now dive into some of his work with a quite different approach and appreciation.
