About this listen
He saw what you did.
He knows who you are....
From the New York Times best-selling author of Pieces of Her and The Silent Wife, an electrifying stand-alone thriller.
An ordinary life...
Leigh Collier has worked hard to build what looks like a normal life. She has a good job as a defense attorney, a daughter doing well in school, and even her divorce is relatively civilized - her life is just as unremarkable as she’d always hoped it would be.
...hides a devastating past...
But Leigh’s ordinary life masks a childhood that was far from average...a childhood tarnished by secrets, broken by betrayal, and finally torn apart by a devastating act of violence.
...but now the past is catching up...
Then a case lands on her desk - defending a wealthy man accused of rape. It’s the highest profile case she’s ever been given - a case that could transform her career, if she wins. But when she meets the accused, she realizes that it’s no coincidence that he’s chosen her as his attorney. She knows him. And he knows her. More to the point, he knows what happened 20 years ago and why Leigh has spent two decades running.
...and time is running out.
If she can’t get him acquitted, she’ll lose much more than the case. The only person who can help her is her estranged younger sister Callie, the last person Leigh would ever want to ask for help. But suddenly she has no choice....

Story
It's been said that all great literature boils down to one of two stories—a man takes a journey, or a stranger comes to town. While mystery writers have been successfully using both approaches for generations, there's something undeniably alluring in the nature of a stranger: the uninvited guest, the unacquainted neighbor, the fish out of water. In the newest collection of stories by the Mystery Writers of America, each author weaves a fresh tale surrounding the eerie feeling that comes when a stranger enters our midst, featuring stories by prolific mystery writers.

Topics taken right from the headlines!
What a sad story this is. Two women both of them abused by a pedophile when they were young teenagers. The girls took care of him permanently.
With a horrible home life they told no one. As they became adults, the older sister took the high road and became an attorney. The other became an addict. The pedophile’s son grew up also. He didn’t fall far from that tree. When he contacts the law firm employing the sister who became a lawyer to defend him in a rape case he hints that he knows what happened to his father and can prove it. The story goes on to become a cat and mouse game that begins taking lives.
This novel is based on brutality and at times could be difficult for some to listen to.
Karin Slaughter is certainly an expert in her choice of topics. The characters and scenarios are truly believable.
Kathleen Early does an outstanding job narrating.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Straight from the headlines
Initially I was put off by the narrative that includes masks, COVID, quarantine, and politics. However, Slaughter is my favorite author so I continued listening and so glad I did.
Anyone that lived through it wants to forget about 2020-2021. This book brings the struggles into the forefront for the reader as the characters struggle to deal with their past, their present and their future.

Lots of redundant descriptions - the story could have progressed without so much repeated detail, way too much on COVID, interesting storyline, a couple of good twists, enjoyed the narration

Keep going!
I ALMOST returned the book. I debated whether or not to return it for the first few hours. I hated all of the characters and was a little tired of the masks (escapism, please). However, the story finally sucked me in and had a great ending! Absolutely worth it.
If you have a problem with the pandemic (for whatever reasons you may have) or addiction, this book is not for you.
Otherwise, I definitely recommend this book! Karin Slaughter is not for the faint of heart.

Never disappointed
I have never been disappointed by a KS book and that continues to be the case. This book made me gasp in a way I had not since Jeffery. If you’re a reader of the series you know what I mean. There were times when I had to stop and go listen to BTS …my happy place… to lift the shock of the book. This is a must read. A MUST!
