Narration was distracting

The way the narrator kept changing his voice from female to male and back again was irritating. The voices were cringy at best.

Story
How did a simple design error cause one of the great disasters of the 1980s - the collapse of the walkways at the Kansas City Hyatt Regency Hotel? What made the graceful and innovative Tacoma Narrows Bridge twist apart in a mild wind in 1940? How did an oversized waterlily inspire the magnificent Crystal Palace, the crowning achievement of Victorian architecture and engineering? These are some of the failures and successes that Henry Petroski, author of the acclaimed The Pencil, examines in this engaging, wonderfully literate book.

No "Monday morning QB" When Lives Are At Stake

I really wanted to like this book, but was immediately turned off when the author was describing the backlash from the engineering community after the disaster. There are some professions where you are dealing with the health and safety of the public and better have looked over those plans, materials, and construction techniques backward, forward and in a loop de loop to make sure the construct is safe. While there is always a chance of error where human activity is concerned, taking the TIME and RESPONSIBILITY to make that error as narrow as possible is, i.e., won't result in the loss of human life is the way to go.

A biased saga
Reviewed: 12-09-16
Let me start by saying that I have watched a lot of documentaries about outlaw bikers because I enjoy them. They are a crazy bunch. I don't have anything against that lifestyle, per se. I love motorcycles and have been able to live their insane history vicariously through the documentaries. But, Thompsons writing throughout tries to make it seem like these guys, in this case, the Hell's Angels are just misunderstood bikers, falsely accused or that they had no choice but to retaliate against the police or other citizens. Really? Come on! If you live outside the law, raise hell wherever you go and gang rape a few women along the way, be honest about it. Thompson purported to be a journalist, but his bias, maybe because he was tagging along and wanted to continue to do so, is infuriating. I got through about half the book and then stopped.

You know, I was very disappointed with this book. I normally love Kevin Pierce as narrator, but I think the story just wasn't my cup of tea. The characters were one dimensional and vague.

Author ruined the book
Reviewed: 04-09-16
The author's note at the beginning of the book was so pompous and unnecessary, It seemed as if he was trying to keep people from listening. I really don't care whether the author of a book I'm listening to believes in the supernatural or not. I just want to be scared, not lectured to about the author's beliefs. It is a work of FICTION after all. If I had known what was coming before I started listening, I would have fast forwarded through his unnecessary rant. Also, so many characters were so unlikable, I kept wishing that they would be killed ASAP as the moments dripped by.

I would have loved to give this book four, even five stars, but I almost stopped listening and returned it before listening to the whole thing. The subject matter was great, the narration was good, but the book was overdrawn and the ending kind of a letdown.

Would you consider the audio edition of In Cold Blood to be better than the print version?
You know, I'm an avid reader. Have been since I was a wee one, but I guess I'm the only one who didn't like this audio book. Too slow and plodding. The print version and the movie are better.
Have you listened to any of Scott Brick’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Scott Brick, awesome as usual!
