Story
Homicide Detective Max Rupert never fully accepted his wife's death, even when he believed that a reckless hit and run driver was the cause. But when he learns that in fact she was murdered, he devotes himself to hunting down her killers. Most of his life he had thought of himself as a decent man. But now he's so consumed with thoughts of retribution that he questions whether he will take that last step and enact the vengeance he longs for.

For me, the plus catalogue books are usually crappy. This was exceedingly good and very well read. It was very easy to see the scenes and the characters.

Story
In a faraway kingdom, in a long-ago land...a young girl lived happily in Moscow with her family: a sister, a father, and an eccentric mother who liked to tell fairy tales and collect porcelain dolls. One summer night, everything changed, and all that remained of that family were the girl and her mother. Now, a decade later and studying at Oxford University, Rosie has an English name, a loving fiancé, and a promising future, but all she wants is to understand—and bury—the past. After her mother dies, Rosie returns to Russia, armed only with her mother’s folklore—and a key.

The story itself was good. However, it was like a 2 hour television program that could have been completed in 45 minutes. The last 1/3rd of the book was painfully slow.

Infringement

Really the 14 year old was not a necessity to the story other than adding more pages to the book. The usual story about how horrible the US has been so why study the holocaust when WE have been so inhumane. And the HUMANIST CELEBRANT to perform a wedding ceremony. Won’t name a judge or religious person? I’m thinking a reader of Ken Follett is more interested in the story than keeping up a woke theme.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.
