About this listen

From the author of the New York Times and USA Today best-selling novel The Alice Network comes another fascinating historical novel about a battle-haunted English journalist and a Russian female bomber pilot who join forces to track the Huntress, a Nazi war criminal gone to ground in America.

In the aftermath of war, the hunter becomes the hunted....

Bold and fearless, Nina Markova always dreamed of flying. When the Nazis attack the Soviet Union, she risks everything to join the legendary Night Witches, an all-female night bomber regiment wreaking havoc on the invading Germans. When she is stranded behind enemy lines, Nina becomes the prey of a lethal Nazi murderess known as the Huntress, and only Nina's bravery and cunning will keep her alive.

Transformed by the horrors he witnessed from Omaha Beach to the Nuremberg Trials, British war correspondent Ian Graham has become a Nazi hunter. Yet one target eludes him: a vicious predator known as the Huntress. To find her, the fierce, disciplined investigator joins forces with the only witness to escape the Huntress alive: the brazen, cocksure Nina. But a shared secret could derail their mission unless Ian and Nina force themselves to confront it.

Growing up in post-war Boston, 17-year-old Jordan McBride is determined to become a photographer. When her long-widowed father unexpectedly comes home with a new fiancée, Jordan is thrilled. But there is something disconcerting about the soft-spoken German widow. Certain that danger is lurking, Jordan begins to delve into her new stepmother’s past - only to discover that there are mysteries buried deep in her family...secrets that may threaten all Jordan holds dear.

In this immersive, heart-wrenching story, Kate Quinn illuminates the consequences of war on individual lives, and the price we pay to seek justice and truth.

One of the biggest questions listeners have when it comes to approaching a new audiobook is whether or not they'll enjoy the narration style. This is understandable, as audiobooks are at least a few hours long (with many clocking in at 20 hours long—or more!), and sticking with one person's voice for that time period can feel like a big commitment. We rounded up some of the best female narrators with a robust list of audiobooks under their belts.

Captivating

Story was long but all characters fully fleshed out. Narrator did an excellent job. I read that the character of The Huntress was based on two real female Nazi war criminals.

Loved it

I haven't read the Alice Network, but I plan to after listening to this book. The Narrator is fantastic and kept the story moving along. The plot is a bit far-fetched but its Fiction and every so often I like to read something that is just a little hard to believe. If you like books about WW2 and former Nazis and their hunters then you will enjoy this.

excellent

War seems to make many people do things they would otherwise not.

This story takes place mostly in the five years after World War II ended. Some of the war comes out in flashbacks. A group of Nazi hunters chase a German woman that had outright murdered people and enjoyed it. The story is told through the eyes of three people that had been affected by the "Huntress' in different ways, all bad.

This book keeps you going. I really enjoyed it.

You Don't Have to Like [ ] to Love this Book!

You don't have to like [history, war, WWII, romance, Quinn] to love this book. In fact, it's okay if you DISLIKE stories about [history, war, WWII, romance]. You will still enjoy this novel/audiobook. Three of the last four audiobooks I've consumed have been Kate Quinn (The Alice Network, The Rose Code, The Huntress), and this is my favorite. I love the way Quinn runs two timelines that converge to complete the stories she tells, and she does a great job of not confusing which timeline you're currently living. I am not a "history buff," and certainly not a WWII history enthusiast, but Quinn does a great job of taking real history and infusing a fictional story line and fictional characters and taking you on a fascinating, emotional, and entertaining ride. It's obvious that Quinn not only spends a great deal of time researching the historical facts of her stories, but also spends time talking to people who actually DO the things that her characters do (whether profession, hobby, etc., e.g., in this novel: pilots, photographers, antique dealers, veterans, musicians, etc.). Quinn leaves you FEELING the characters' passion, disdain, fears, etc.

Finally, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention how talented Saskia Maarleveld, the narrator, is. She does a great job of compartmentalizing the characters' voices. I don't know how she keeps them straight, but she does! She also does a great job with different accents (English, Russian, German, Polish, Boston, to name a few) and making it easy for the listeners to discern male and female characters. All four of my last four audiobooks have been narrated by Maarleveld. (Searching Saskia Maarleveld is how I picked the one non-Quinn book of the last 4 I've consumed, and incidentally, how I found my next audiobook.)

You become invested in the characters

Definitely recommend listening to this novel.

The story was a little unfocused and anti-climatic at times but the character development was excellent and I found I was really engaged and involved. In particular I loved the Nia character - original and complex.

If possible, better than Alice Network!

Excellent story - had just a hitch getting the characters and era straight but from there, it flew (no pun intended)!
