Story
For David Goggins, childhood was a nightmare--poverty, prejudice, and physical abuse colored his days and haunted his nights. But through self-discipline, mental toughness, and hard work, Goggins transformed himself from a depressed, overweight young man with no future into a US Armed Forces icon and one of the world's top endurance athletes. The only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force tactical air controller, he went on to set records in numerous endurance events.

I read his second book, Never Finished, before this book but the order didn’t matter. Both books resonated with me. At the heart of this is the theme of human potential. We have a duty to ourselves to strive to be our best, with no excuses getting in the way. We are in charge of our attitude and effort, and ultimately the story of our lives. And it’s up to us to learn from our mistakes and never give up. He isn’t a glory hound at all in this book but a guy who overcame a lot, shared his mistakes along the way (including inadvertently alienating some colleagues in the Seals) and ultimately wants to encourage others to not give up on themselves. Along the way he shares lots of very interesting stories of life before, during, and after the military. I thought this book was very inspiring. I am a 59 yo disabled veteran who will be undergoing spinal fusion. This book has reminded me of my own history of resilience and that whatever happens, I will find a way to adapt and overcome.

Story
Four days before Christmas in 1943, a badly damaged American bomber struggled to fly over wartime Germany. At its controls was a 21-year-old pilot. Half his crew lay wounded or dead. It was their first mission. Suddenly a sleek, dark shape pulled up on the bomber’s tail - a German Messerschmitt fighter. Worse, the German pilot was an ace, a man able to destroy the American bomber with the squeeze of a trigger.

Appealing to those interested in history or simply a great story. Demonstrates the conflicts and complexity of individuals and units during war. A WWII yarn with a very human touch.

The idea of an American joining ISIS and adopting this mindset shows how certain people at certain times in their lives can be situationally vulnerable to religious dogma. In this case, the subject was a socially marginalized “loser” who, as he got older, wanted to find meaning and purpose in his life. The author handles the story with good journalistic balance.

Story
Known by his troops in World War II as "The GI General" because of his close identification with the men under his command, Omar Bradley commanded the U.S. Twelfth Army Group in Europe. By the spring of 1945, this group contained four field armies, 12 corps, 48 divisions, and more than 1,300,000 men, the largest exclusively American field command in U.S. history.

Nice overview

The book does a nice job of describing Omar Bradley from his humble roots to the pinnacle of military accomplishments. I learned a lot about how he mattered to World War II and the subsequent development of the army. I’ve always heard about him but never knew why he was so important. Glad that this book came out. Highly recommended reading.
