Story
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College-Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

I love it but…..

I love this book and the world building. I just wish that we didn’t have to listen to another powerful, intelligent, courageous female badass second guess, belittle, doubt, and have no faith in herself. Listening to monologue after monologue of Violet dismissing the love for her, belief and confidence in her, and willingness to follow her, is exhausting. She’s incredible and she deserves to be a female leader that though she may have internal struggles doesn’t have to fully dismiss herself to evolve within the story. Do young women reading this book think that they are supposed to doubt themselves and those that love her this much? Why can’t it be that Violet is a badass that is as confident as the man that loves her? Of course there are moments of self doubt for everyone but it just to be over the top for her. I love this world, most of the characters, and the story building. It’s the only flaw for me.

Story
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

Story
Thirteen years fleeing witch hunters and the looming threat of death. Nineteen-year-old Remy knows she is possibly the last red witch alive, and she is determined to stay that way. The Northern Court King has slaughtered her home court and placed a bounty on red witch heads. When four fae warriors enter her tavern refuge, Remy tries to flee, but her magic isn’t strong enough to stop a fae prince on a mission.

Good pace, good story!

I love that the author gives the reader credit for being able to build the story as we go instead of hammer on forever in the beginning to build a whole back story. I like that the story finds new layers throughout the book. Good character development and plot twists. Spicy is there but if you’re looking for super spice it’s not there but maybe it will step up in the following books. I definitely liked it and just got the next two books.
