Story
Nora hasn’t looked back. Not since she fled Texas to start a new life. Away from her father’s volatile temper and the ever-watchful gaze of her claustrophobically conservative small town, Nora has freed herself. She can live - and love - however she wants. The only problem is that she also left behind the one woman she can’t forget. Now, tragedy calls her back home to confront her past - and reconcile her future.

So relatable it made my heart hurt.

I'm just sitting here after the book ended and giving a long sigh about how much I wish real life could be like the books I love so much. This could have easily ended as badly as it ended good, there was as much against a happy ending as there was for a bittersweet ending. Not everyone is going to accept that love is love, not everyone will be cheering your relationship on, and not every family member is going to magically be accepting of who you are, but that is okay.
This is why I love these stories of 30+ loves coming together. Maturity means taking everything important in our lives into consideration, not just "I love you so everything is great" type of love we have when we are young.

Beautifully read epic tale with truly strong women
Reviewed: 04-11-22
At no moment did I find my attention waning away from this masterpiece! Priya (main character) grows so much in this single book, and it isn't forced by janky mechanics or magically made better, although she has use of the magic. She grows into her power, into what she truly wants for herself and her people. They all have true flaws, as do all the characters in the book, and not shallow flaws that mark too many "Mary Sue" main characters of other fantasy books with strong women.
I found myself emotionally invested in the story, agreeing and disagreeing with the choices that the characters make only because I understood how the choices they make would affect them. I never felt like the characters were being railroaded into a single version of who they are, the choices they made added weight into the whole of their being without overdone dramatics.
Astoundingly beautiful tale, I cannot wait to start into book 2 to see how their new lives add more to their whole beings!

better than I thought it would be!
Reviewed: 03-22-22
the main character really is a Mary Sue, but her power and attitude is at least better explained in this second book, and she actually almost dies! there's even another character that is more powerful than her in it, if it can be believed! This story really is well told, truth be what it is, and if you can just get over the fact that the main character will always be beautiful and powerful, and always have endearing "faults", along with probably nearly living forever, the rest of the characters and the story itself is pretty fun to listen to. it's like all the best parts of the story, told by someone who is a fan of sardonic humor.

Story
Nearly three decades ago, Katherine Kyle and Jamison Parker saved the life of the president of the United States, in the process exposing an exceedingly dangerous, powerful shadow organization. The entire episode came at great personal cost and forever changed the trajectory of the couple's lives. Now at the peak of her career as one of the preeminent novelists of the day, Jay is finally ready to put the past to rest in a fictional treatment...until powerful government forces intervene.

Absolutely wonderful story, Not my favorite voice.
Reviewed: 04-24-21
The story is lovely, a toss back to being in love back when you dared not let the wrong people find out about it. It was a harsh time to find yourself attracted to the same sex and have that being such a burden to being able to explore it and try to revel in it. The narrator is not horrible at the job, she reads quite clearly and is easily understood. You can tell the characters apart pretty well, and she puts a good amount of emotions and feelings into her words. I simply find her voice harsh to my ears, and that is in no way her fault. By the end of the book, I was able to simply enjoy the story with it's extremes and got used to the voice that brought the story to me.

Enjoyable and steamy even without the sex!
Reviewed: 04-01-21
To be fair, there is one sex scene, but most of the stream comes from their combative relationship with each other. I found myself telling them to fricken kisses already several times, while I did also enjoy the struggle between their push and pull dynamics with each other.

When that dream died along with the girl she'd planned to marry one day, she'd vowed to forget about happily ever afters. When Gina agrees to renovate Carrie's soon-to-be new house as a favor to her brother's boss, she doesn't welcome Carrie's overtures at friendship or her own unexpected attraction.

Kim could tell at a glance Angel wasn't the average attractive yet poorly disguised extraterrestrial scout sent to assess Earth's defenses before the inevitable alien invasion. Angel's memory loss cover story? Lame. Robbing a passing ruffian of his shirt to cover her naked body? NOT a good way to avoid attracting attention! As a science fiction geek, Kim felt herself uniquely qualified to watch Angel and thwart her dark mission...once the alien got around to it.

Good idea, very poorly written story
- By realdog on 09-16-15
Funny Story, nice mystery, but a bit convoluted.
Reviewed: 11-26-19
The main character is someone who thinks quite highly of themselves and does her best to maintain distance from others. She comes across a beautiful woman one night who claims to have lost her memory and speaks in a very strange way. The main theme of the story is the main character making wild assumptions about everything and everyone, and the strange woman sort of just going along with them. It reminds me of when someone goes off their bipolar meds and feel like everything is a conspiracy against them or about them. Like, EVERYTHING. I mostly listened to all of it because I wanted to see if the main character would ever become self aware of her own paranoia.

I could not believe that this book was over as fast it was, the content of this book was high quality the whole way through, which I was totally not expecting for it being 21 hours long. It made me laugh, made me cry, made me outraged! All of it was wonderful, and the narrator, Christine Williams does all the reading so perfectly entertainingly!

It has been quite a long time since I have cried while listening to a book, and when the book makes me cry, I have to admit that it had dug in deep into my heart and affected me personally. Most of it is pretty light-hearted and I had fun, laughing and smirking a lot with hearty chuckles! I am not a huge fan of first-person perspectives, but man this was a great one.
