Story
Photographer Isla Wilson is thrilled she's landed her dream job, but the clients who hired her are getting stranger by the day. It sounded so perfect—a month's assignment at the lush Scottish Highlands property of architect Alban McGregor, and his wife, Jessica. But in the woods, there's a playhouse with a chilling history. Two years ago, the McGregors' daughter Elodie was abducted and then died in that playhouse. The townspeople insist her abductor had to be a stranger in their town. Alban refuses to knock the playhouse down, even keeping a picture of it on his wall.

Lots of potential BUT...
Reviewed: 02-06-25
This story was gripping at the beginning, but as many other reviews state the ending is just ridiculous and a let down. The author threw out so many totally unrealistic variables, as if to just keep you engaged,,, with zero payoff at the end. It felt like she was writing what would sell because she ran out of ideas or real inspiration. It reminded me of when a tv series finds out they're getting cancelled, and writes a jumbled ending without thinking out or caring about the details. I won't give any major spoilers (as a few reviews do), but there is no way medically or legally any of this story would shake out in real life (unless set in a different era)... small town or no. The writing itself had a lot of potential though, and did a good job of putting you in the narration is good. There is that.

Story
When Emily Lane isn’t busy running her charming Christmas-themed store, “Under the Mistletoe”, located in the quaint tourist town of Fletcher’s Grove, she finds herself compelled to investigate not so quaint local murders. On the surface, Emily is a perfectly lovely, good-natured puzzle-solver and mystery lover. But she is hiding a secret past from everyone in town. And when Emily begins her personal investigations, Detective-Constable Sam Wilner, a smart and attractive cop—with a crush on Emily that is not completely unrequited—begins to wonder if there’s more to Emily than meets the eye.

This is super entertaining. I love that it's low commitment... since the stories are short... But the storylines and character plots don't suffer from it. As a lover of cozy mysteries, I hope audible keeps this series going!

Terrible narration

The book itself is pretty good. Standard for the topic... could have been easily AI written... But it's good for what it is. The virtual voice however destroys it, since hygge itself and hyggelig are horribly mispronounced... and the overall narration is super annoying. I'm sure the hard copy of this would be much better if one has the time and interest.
