Finally, characters I like!
Reviewed: 05-17-24
Character development and world building is fantastic. The violence was not overly graphic so I was able to handle it. The story does not resolve in book 1 but I am excited to get number two and number three of the series. Super enjoyable! Crazy good so that I walked around for a day with earbuds in to finish the entire book.

Story
Queenie Jenkins is a 25-year-old Jamaican British woman living in London, straddling two cultures and slotting neatly into neither. She works at a national newspaper, where she’s constantly forced to compare herself to her white middle-class peers. After a messy breakup from her White long-term boyfriend, Queenie seeks comfort in all the wrong places...including several hazardous men who do a good job of occupying brain space and a bad job of affirming self-worth.

LOVE QUEENIE!
Reviewed: 12-24-23
I love the main character, Queenie, and was sorry that the story had to end. I loved learning a little about another culture. The narrator has a beautiful voice, a beautiful accent and is able to voice both female and male characters with ease. I like that everything wasn't obvious right away about the reasons for Queenie's behavior. She's so vulnerable and lovable and I felt like I was alarming for the ride with her and her friends. I will pre-order this author's next book when she writes it, please do write another one soon!Excellent! Worth two credits!!

Character driven suspense plus happy ending!
Reviewed: 12-24-23
I really enjoyed the characters and story lines in this book. I wrote out the various characters so that I could keep them straight at the beginning. I do this when I'm really interested in the story. The characters weren't perfect but I found them likable and enjoyed getting to know them and understand their struggles. Each storyline was resolved in a realistic yet satisfying way and despite this being a very suspenseful and dramatic book, I felt like there were lots of happy endings and no sad, depressing ones which is paramount for me. Absolutely worth a credit!

The story had a nice flow with lots of character development along the way. Initially I thought the male narrator was too calm but as the story went on, I enjoyed the pace and his skill. The female narrator was great as well. It's been awhile since I've had to have patience to really figure out a story. There were lots of twists and turns and the ending was satisfying. I recommend this book!

Far outside his comfort zone, Paul has a mission: to see if he can be adventurous, fearless, free. In short, to become someone new. Soon after arriving in Italy, he notices a small, scruffy, self-assured dog trotting alongside a canal with the confidence he so desperately wants for himself. This street dog and his instincts for survival lend Paul’s trip a singular purpose.

I don't usually read short stories but since this was included in my membership, I tried it. I had read The Gunkle by this author and found that to be a heartwarming, reflective book and I found the same with this short story. The main character was relatable, likable and witty. Enjoy!

Story
In an authoritarian America, personal freedoms are at risk, information is being controlled, and legal citizens suddenly find themselves being deported. A growing resistance movement is active, angry, and looking to strike back. And a TV show for kids may be the key. Enter Celeste Montgomery and Bailey Vance. Celeste is an intern for the show that features Bailey singing and dancing with puppets. While Bailey teaches the kids about geography, Celeste is planting codes into the script, songs, background, whatever she can do to pass messages for the resistance.

FUN!

Fantastically fun uniquely narrated story! Starts with the high-pitched sing-song voice of a childrens show host/puppet. Information was provided on a need to know basis, lol, so that there was enough intrigue to keep my interest. Great commentary on racial & social justice as well as a nudge regarding the "big brother" many of us already have in our homes which in the book is a government mandated AI assistant (alexa-esque). Really loved this novella.

I enjoyed getting to know the main character, Nate Shepherd, in bits and pieces as the story went along. He's a witty and good-hearted attorney. The court case caught and kept my interest. It was unusual with a lot of likable characters which I enjoy. I look forward to continuing the series!

So much to love!
Reviewed: 09-14-23
I love this book and the narrator so much that after finishing this story, I immediately searched for other books written or read by each. The plot was unique with serious themes around relationships but also light-hearted. The narrator's voice is beautiful and she does a fantastic job of changing accents and voice register so that you can easily tell which character is speaking. I was entertained and invested in each character and would love to be part of their family! This book for me is about love and acceptance of yourself and others.
