McBride is a story teller

I you are looking for academic conscious new literature McBride is not your guy. He tells a story of Brooklyn life in the projects as if you sat next to him on a train and he just began to ruminate on a man he knew called Sport Coat. The narrative fashioned as it comes to him. It is a delightful story.

Naipaul’s extraordinary writing talent combined with his unique experience of the preserved traditions of India transposed to the Colonial Backwaters of the new world give him special insights and expression of the complexity of history that only the novel can provide. A Way in the World is an excellent example.

Gessen is an excellent writer and witness of Russia's return to the totalitarian failed state of Lenin and Stalin. In a precise, direct narrative she chronicles how KGB operative Putin, with sullen cunning, stumbled into his dictatorship thereby completely closing any hope of individual political freedom opened by the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The two bell weathers of Spanish literature Cervantes and Borges. Roberto Bolano touches them both in 2666. Like those two masters he sustains a imagined narrative in a new way. He has his own subtle surreal world that is absurd, violent and slyly, wickedly funny.
