All Demetri has ever wanted was to protect his deaf sister. It’s why he became a doctor, and it’s why he must get her away from Colorado. Hunted by the Irish mafia, Demetri and Sandy flee to Bear Creek, where they settle into a calm life, free from the troubles of their past, or so they think. Couldn’t Get Past the Narrator
Reviewed: 05-09-23
I honestly can’t give a true review on the writing or story as I was unable to get past the narration to finish the first chapter. The story was interesting enough but the narration dropped it down to terribly boring. I’m sorry to be so negative but, I really wanted to listen to this book. Not bad enough though I guess.

Story
The hardscrabble folks of Troublesome Creek have to scrap for everything - everything except books, that is. Thanks to Roosevelt's Kentucky Pack Horse Library Project, Troublesome's got its very own traveling librarian, Cussy Mary Carter. Cussy's not only a book woman, however, she's also the last of her kind, her skin a shade of blue unlike most anyone else. Not everyone is keen on Cussy's family or the Library Project, and a Blue is often blamed for any whiff of trouble.

This book was such a wonderful read or, listen I guess I should say. I was pleasantly surprised at how good it is ( that’s not to take anything away from the author. I’ve never read one of her books before.) And the narrator was absolutely perfect. Kudos to her for making a great book come alive. I look forward to reading and hearing more from both of these women!

Story
It's February, 1852, and all around Chicago, Maggie sees postings soliciting "eligible women" to travel to the gold mines of Goosetown. A young seamstress with a small daughter, she has nothing to lose. She joins 43 other women and two pious reverends on the dangerous 2,000-mile journey west. None are prepared for the hardships they face on the trek or for the strengths they didn't know they possessed. Maggie discovers she’s not the only one looking to leave dark secrets behind.

Everything about this book was the best I’ve read/listened to this far. The story, the performance, all of it. My only issue at all was that Mary and Clara were killed off. I can see one of them if necessary for the story, but not both. It was a little overkill (no pun intended) with those and all the rest of the deaths. Other than that I loved everything about this.
