Story
Beloved author Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction with a unique love story set in the New York City theater world during the 1940s. Told from the perspective of an older woman as she looks back on her youth with both pleasure and regret (but mostly pleasure), City of Girls explores themes of female sexuality and promiscuity, as well as the idiosyncrasies of true love. In 1940, nineteen-year-old Vivian Morris has just been kicked out of Vassar College, owing to her lackluster freshman-year performance.

15 hours I’d like back
Reviewed: 11-26-19
Like many reviewers, I wanted to like this book. Eat Pray Love is one of my all-time favorites. However, I just couldn’t fall in love with this story. For lack of a better word, it was boring. I kept waiting for something more interesting to happen but it never did. This is a book to cross off your list.

This was a good story but the ending was predictable and I figured it all out while reading. So, not a shocking twist, but a good, sound story.

Story
In 2012, Beck Dorey-Stein is working five part-time jobs and just scraping by when a posting on Craigslist lands her, improbably, in the Oval Office as one of Barack Obama’s stenographers. The ultimate DC outsider, she joins the elite team who accompany the president wherever he goes, recorder and mic in hand. On whirlwind trips across time zones, Beck forges friendships with a dynamic group of fellow travelers - young men and women who, like her, leave their real lives behind to hop aboard Air Force One in service of the president.

High Hopes
Reviewed: 09-13-18
As an Obama fan, I really anticipated reading this book, as I expected it to shed light into his administration, as only someone on the inside could do. However, so much of this book revolved around Ms. Dory Stein being a booty call, that the political and humanitarian stories of the President were lost. I wanted to get behind this author, as she had the potential to be an inspiration to aspiring women in Washington, D.C., but I felt like the tales of her unrequited love were simply another example of a young woman devaluing herself for a powerful man. I kept on wishing that the author found her inner strength to end this toxic "relationship," but alas, I was mostly disappointed.

Story
The funny and talented Chip Gaines is well known to millions of people as a TV star, renovation expert, bestselling author, husband to Joanna, and father of four in Waco, Texas. But long before the world took notice, Chip was a serial entrepreneur who was always ready for the next challenge. Whether it was buying a neighborhood laundromat or talking a bank into a loan for some equipment to start a lawn-mowing service, Chip always knew that the most important thing was to take that first step.

After reading his first book with Joanna, I had high hopes for Chip's next release. However, it did not give practical strategies as I had hoped and was more fluff then I expected. Don't get me wrong, I am still a fan, but I thought the book would have more substance. Also, the epilogue read by Miranda, one of Chip's staff members, made him sound kind of like a jerk. I would have personally left that part out. Not to mention, when she read her section, it almost sounded like she was afraid of Chip. Her voice seem to waver a lot.

Story
After the sudden death of her husband, Sheryl Sandberg felt certain that she and her children would never feel pure joy again. "I was in 'the void,'" she writes, "a vast emptiness that fills your heart and lungs and restricts your ability to think or even breathe." Her friend Adam Grant, a psychologist at Wharton, told her there are concrete steps people can take to recover and rebound from life-shattering experiences. We are not born with a fixed amount of resilience. It is a muscle that everyone can build.

Can't agree with her views!
Reviewed: 04-20-16
Although I tried to understand her ideas in the context of the book she was writing, I struggled to agree or even think she was setting a positive example. I am an Italian, Catholic, and soon-to-be-wife, so I thought I would identify with Melissa. However, I just think her life is too old-fashioned. I struggled to get through this book.
