From the characters’ names to their gargantuan struggles, the tenor and tone of this story beat to a medieval rhythm that drew me in and kept me rapt till the end with rare exceptions.

Astoundingly good narrator
Reviewed: 04-10-25
The sheer number of characters in this story is one thing but then you have to consider the variety. But the challenge seems to have been an easy one for this narrator, who excels in every voice and every situation.

Insightful and full of wonder

I’ve listened to this story twice now. I could hear it twice more. Doerr gives us only as much information as we need to propel us forward. But I keep slowing the pace to absorb the marvels he’s relating. Now I want to read another of his novels. It will be the fourth.

Expertly narrated compelling story
Reviewed: 11-26-22
Well-written and expertly narrated, this compelling story of a woman who wants more than anything to work in a profession that eschews her every effort to enter it. The narrator seemed to embody each character with precision and empathy. And her voice was rich with undertones that clearly conveyed the emotion at hand. I could not turn it off. Thank goodness for Thanksgiving weekend’s holiday from everyday tasks.
