About this listen

Stephen Fry brings the richness of these magical stories to life in the original British recordings, available for the first time in the United States and Canada.

Turning the envelope over, his hand trembling, Harry saw a purple wax seal bearing a coat of arms: a lion, an eagle, a badger and a snake surrounding a large letter 'H'.

Treat your ears to a performance so rich and captivating you'll imagine yourself in the halls of Hogwarts. Wherever you listen, the unmistakable voice of Stephen Fry is guaranteed to guide you ever more deeply into this magical story and transport you to the heart of the adventure.

Harry Potter has never even heard of Hogwarts when the letters start dropping on the doormat at number four, Privet Drive. Addressed in green ink on yellowish parchment with a purple seal, they are swiftly confiscated by his grisly aunt and uncle. Then, on Harry's eleventh birthday, a great beetle-eyed giant of a man called Rubeus Hagrid bursts in with some astonishing news: Harry Potter is a wizard, and he has a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. An incredible adventure is about to begin!

Theme music composed by James Hannigan.

Having become classics of our time, the Harry Potter stories never fail to bring comfort and escapism. With their message of hope, belonging and the enduring power of truth and love, the story of the Boy Who Lived continues to delight generations of new listeners.

Stephen Fry is exceptional

I love these books but listening to Stephen Fry makes the magic exceptional. The American version is great but this is pure joy!

If you loved Jim Dale, you'll love Stephen Fry

I grew listening to Jim Dale's version of the audiobooks and absolutely adore his rendition, those will always be my number ones with the amount of times I've re-listened to them. My fiancé, a Yorkshireman, grew up listening the Stephen Fry and in his opinion his version will always be the best. But now we get the best of both worlds and I'm so glad for it! Stephen Fry brings a different flair and tone than I'm used to but honestly it's still amazing! It's also pretty cool to the hear the little British-ism here (that I now understand) but most certainly weren't in the American version. I don't know why this wasn't available to the US crowd until now but I hope that everyone gets to listen to it and gets the same joy listening to Stephen Fry's version as they did with Jim Dale! Can't wait to finish the rest of the series! :)

Depression Cure

At 29 years old, I still haven’t found anything that is quite like these books. If I go too long without reading/listening to them, my depression starts to creep up on me. These books have taught me that the most powerful magic is choosing to love those around you regardless of how spiders are in your cupboard.

Lack of Distinct Voices

First, this is likely to be a severely unpopular opinion, but I liked the Jim Dale version much better. Don't get me wrong, Stephen Fry has a gloriously plummy British accent, but his character voices sounded very similar to me. If I hadn't listened to the Dale books a dozen (or more!) times, I wouldn't have known who was speaking with the Fry version. I just couldn't distinguish the different characters. I purchased the UK series to see what was different from the US version, and in that regard, I enjoyed the books. However, the Dale version is a far better narration, in my opinion.

First Time ever reading - I’m 26.

Wow - it was good. Should’ve read earlier. I’m ashamed. I shall remedy this by reading them all one after the other.

Yay for Stephen Fry!

I'm so excited that these are finally available in the US. I love Jim Dale, but Steven Fry's version of the Harry Potter books is my absolute favorite. I think JK Rowling is about to make another billion dollars. 😊 I've been waiting for these to come out on Audible in the US for many years. I have the Jim Dale version of the books, and I just spent seven of my credits getting the Stephen Fry version. The books are great as always. The reading by both men is great. I think I just really enjoy Stephen Fry's voices and pacing a bit better. Excellent. That's all I've got to say.

Stephen Fry

The first Harry Potter book is a well told story, but having Steven Fry as narrator makes it truly magical.

Wonderful

Dale's version has many good points, as well as some major flaws. But this version by Stephen Fry? Like having a kindly uncle or grandfather reading it to you. A worthwhile addition to anyone's library.
