Story
At first, the residents of Kauai Beach Resort took little notice of their new neighbors. The glamorous blonde and her tall husband fit the image of the ritzy gated community. The couple seemed to keep to themselves - until the police knocked on their door with a search warrant. Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell had fled to Hawaii in the midst of being investigated for the disappearance of Lori's children back in Idaho - Tylee and JJ - who hadn't been seen alive in five months.

Not the right narrator
Reviewed: 11-15-24
This is such a uniquely American story (sadly) that using a British narrator is a bit jarring. The phrasing and pronunciation is off, especially since I listened to many of the original quotes from Dateline, 48 Hours, etc.

Story
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Excellent Hero Journey

Between the author and the narrator, I ran the gamut of emotions. I frequently laughed out loud and was transported by the visual pictures the descriptions created. I think one can enjoy this even if not scientifically inclined because the relationships of the characters are as important as the logistics of the trip.

Story
On an April day in 1937, the sky opens and fire rains down upon the small Spanish town of Guernica. Seventeen-year-old Sibi and her family are caught up in the horror. Griff, an American military attaché, pulls Sibi from the wreckage, and it’s only the first time he saves her life in a span of hours. When Germany claims no involvement in the attack, insisting the Spanish Republic was responsible, Griff guides Sibi to lie to Nazi officials. If she or her sisters reveal that they saw planes bearing swastikas, the gestapo will silence them—by any means necessary.

Better to read than listen
Reviewed: 09-18-22
I do enjoy Karen Robards' books because she does have interesting plots and characters. This one reminded me why I usually stick to reading Robards versus listening. I lost track of how many sentences started with Sibi's heart freezing, speeding up, racing etc. Listening to a story can really emphasize phrases that a writer might overuse. It's easier to gloss over them in print. The narrator did a fine job overall.

It's called comedy, folks!

Many of the reviews are complaining about Daisy's social commentary. I think it speaks more to THEIR issues than Daisy's. Duh. She makes me think and laugh while learning about some crazy aspect of human life.

True Crime with a Heart
Reviewed: 09-01-21
I first found Morbid when I ran out of Dateline episodes and was looking for a new true crime podcast. I started with the first few episodes, and I admit, at first, I was underwhelmed. (especially with the sound quality - which gets MUCH better as you go on) But, they had done some cases with which I was unfamiliar and spurred me to read more on my own. I came back to it later when my 18 y.o. said she had been listening to Ash & Alaina at college. Their research and comedic commentary have improved drastically, and I am almost caught up on episodes now. Definitely not for anyone under 16, due to language and subject matter, but now I frequently download episodes for car trips because the whole family enjoys them and they make the hours speed by. If it's not for you, no problem, but don't hate on them! I also come from a loud, funny Irish family and it feels like hanging out with my family while driving or doing housework. They bring a humanity to cases which is respectful enough that several family members of missing/murdered people covered on episodes have come on the podcast to talk to them. This is not dry fact recitation or investigative journalism - nor is it meant to be - but it is well-researched and humane while noticing the humor in the oddities of people. And aren't the oddities of people part of the reason we are interested in True Crime in the first place?

Female Voices are Terrible :(
Reviewed: 06-22-15
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
The Trilogy is GREAT! Bad narration - thank goodness he does not do the other two books.
What other book might you compare Blood Brothers to and why?
Nora's Vampire Trilogy has a similar feel, and I really enjoyed reading these in print.
What didn’t you like about Phil Gigante’s performance?
He cannot do realistic female voices. All the women either have exaggerated accents or sound like complete airheads, which is what Nora Roberts' heroines are NOT. I love this trilogy, but if Phil had done all three, I couldn't have made it through. I get the nails-on-a-chalkboard feeling when he performs women :(
