Story
Early in the morning on August 27, 1996, 20-year-old Scott Dominguez showed up for an ordinary day at the fertilizing plant where he worked. By 11:00 am, he was clinging to life, unconscious and suffocating from toxic exposure to cyanide in a tank that was supposed to contain only mud and water. EPA Special Agent Joseph Hilldorfer was tasked with finding out what really happened on that horrific day in Soda Springs, Idaho, but the answers would not be easily uncovered.

In Being Mortal, best-selling author Atul Gawande tackles the hardest challenge of his profession: how medicine can not only improve life but also the process of its ending. Medicine has triumphed in modern times, transforming birth, injury, and infectious disease from harrowing to manageable. But in the inevitable condition of aging and death, the goals of medicine seem too frequently to run counter to the interest of the human spirit.

A Must Read if you or a loved one is aging or ailing!
Reviewed: 01-24-22
Dr Gawande addresses the very real public and personal health issues that accompany the process of dying in a world where nothing seems impossible. He discusses the balance of safety and the quality of life as we age and lose our abilities to function independently in a “safe” way.
He lays the groundwork for having difficult conversations with our loved one and with ourselves. He does it using actual patient case studies and language non medical folks can understand.

Poor Pronunciation
Reviewed: 09-19-20
Roosevelt’s story is interesting and ties closely to familiar history. The narrator pronounced quite a few words incorrectly. Examples:
butte is frequently pronounced “but”
Helena is pronounced “hull-n-a”
Coeur D’Alene should be pronounced kore-duh-LANE
These errors were annoying.

Story
In 1942, the Gestapo sent out an urgent transmission: "She is the most dangerous of all Allied spies. We must find and destroy her." The target in their sights was Virginia Hall, a Baltimore socialite who talked her way into Special Operations Executive, the spy organization dubbed Winston Churchill's "Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare." She became the first Allied woman deployed behind enemy lines and - despite her prosthetic leg - helped to light the flame of the French Resistance, revolutionizing secret warfare as we know it.

I loved the story of this woman! Her role in the recruitment, training, and deployment of French Resistance fighter is amazing.
I generally prefer fictional depictions of WWII history, but this biography was a fabulous read. The author did a great job of telling Virginia’s story of courage and determination.
