Story
For years, Lady Bancroft’s Valentine’s Ball at Bancroft Hall had been a glittering gathering of high society’s most eligible men and women. Countless happy couples owe their love stories to her matchmaking, their gratitude keeping Lady Bancroft in the genteel comfort of her grand Cotswolds estate. But this year tragedy strikes. A murder threatens to ruin everything. Desperate, Lady Bancroft turns to her neighbour, the dashing Major Heathcliff Lennox. A decorated war hero and now a consultant to Scotland Yard, Lennox would much rather be fishing.

Great Escapism
Reviewed: 06-14-25
I really enjoyed listening to this. It’s the best Lennox mystery out of the last three or four. The plot is good if a little messy. Character development was really good and it was great to see the core cast of characters included in this entry.
Still getting used to the new narrator - it’s different but he’s a solid actor and the narration flows very well.

Solid narration, subpar story
Reviewed: 05-10-25
I’m a fan of this series, and this book is the weak link in the chain. The plot and story pace are plodding, and the non-core characters are forgettable. Even Lennox and Swift seem bored with it all.
I see that some reviewers have complained about the narrator, but I thought he was solid. He’s a damned good actor and covered the material very well. Is it different from what Sam did - yes - but that doesn’t mean it’s bad, it’s just different. Not to mention that we likely won’t have to go so long between audio releases.
Looking forward to the next release.

Story
In the canton of Yarrowdale, at the very edge of the Empire’s reach, a Treasury officer has disappeared into thin air—vanishing from a room within a heavily guarded tower, its door and windows locked from the inside. To solve the case, the Empire calls on its most brilliant and mercurial detective, the great Ana Dolabra. At her side, as always, is her bemused assistant Dinios Kol. Ana soon discovers that they are investigating not a disappearance but a murder—and one of surpassing cunning, carried out by an opponent who can pass through warded doors like a ghost.

I’ve not been a fan of Fantasy, but this novel and its predecessor convinced me to give the genre a chance.
Extremely well written, the plot is excellent, the narration is excellent, the whole thing is excellent. 10/10

Story
In Daretana’s greatest mansion, a high imperial officer lies dead—killed, to all appearances, when a tree erupted from his body. Even here at the Empire’s borders, where contagions abound and the blood of the leviathans works strange magical changes, it’s a death both terrifying and impossible. Assigned to investigate is Ana Dolabra, a detective whose reputation for brilliance is matched only by her eccentricities. Rumor has it that she wears a blindfold at all times, and that she can solve impossible cases without even stepping outside the walls of her home.

This book was randomly recommended on BlueSky and I thought, why not? And wow, am I happy to have listened to the suggestion. This story grabbed me from the start and never let go. Not my usual genre, but I’ll be listening to more. The narrator was outstanding, brilliant performance.

I adore these books - love the characters, the writing style, and the narration. That said, I’ve grown tired of Lennox being so bad with money plotline. He’s married to a smart woman, let her manage the funds, and IDK, maybe figure out how to generate an income rather than having just the right windfall drop into their laps.
