Serial space opera fun
Reviewed: 10-22-23
Book two in this series had no sophomore slump. If anything the story benefited from being able to build on the first book. I like the new characters introduced and the expansion of the aliens and alien technology. As any good series does, it left me wanting more.

Story
Inheriting your uncle's supervillain business is more complicated than you might think. Particularly when you discover who's running the place. Charlie's life is going nowhere fast. A divorced substitute teacher living with his cat in a house his siblings want to sell, all he wants is to open a pub downtown, if only the bank will approve his loan. Then his long-lost uncle Jake dies and leaves his supervillain business (complete with island volcano lair) to Charlie. But becoming a supervillain isn't all giant laser death rays and lava pits.

A quick fun read
Reviewed: 09-27-23
John Scalzi has taken up the mantle left by Sir Terry Pratchett passing. Here’s a fictional world that’s mostly our own as seen through new eyes. There are lots of truths peppered throughout, especially about the supposedly “smartest guys in the room” and about family. There are talking cats and corporate skullduggery aplenty. There’s also plenty of “punching up” humor. Honestly the synopsis is spot on and spoiler free.

Story
It’s not easy making the career jump from office-supplies-store middle manager to heroic interdimensional adventurer. At least, Jason tries to be heroic, but it's hard to be good when all your powers are evil. He’ll face off against cannibals, cultists, wizards, monsters...and that’s just on the first day. He’s going to need courage, he’s going to need wit, and he’s going to need some magic powers of his own. But first, he’s going to need pants.

Adventure awaits

This is a great book for anyone who enjoys role playing games or who just likes fantasy adventures. There’s a lot of character development and philosophical ideas to enjoy as well. I’m hooked and look forward to the next book in the series.

Story
In the world of Warbreaker, each person is born endowed with the power of one Breath―which can be sold and collected by others, then used to Awaken objects and even corpses to do their bidding. A few individuals who die in glory return as gods, with the power of thousands of Breath, but no memory of their mortal lives―and are enthroned in the Court of Gods in Hallandren’s capital. To Vivenna and Siri, princesses of Idris, the abuse of Breath and the claim of the Returned to be gods are repugnant blasphemy.

Good story but only okay characters
Reviewed: 03-03-23
This is a story with several twists that are hidden until late in the book. These twists somewhat invalidate the actions of the main female characters who become background characters in their own story. It’s like someone said, “Stand back ladies, and let the great men be great.” Sanderson does a better job with female characters in other stories.

Story
It's the dawn of a new era - and we're ready to colonize Mars. But the company that's been contracted to construct a new Mars base has made promises they can't fulfill and is desperate enough to cut corners. The first thing to go is the automation...the next thing they'll have to deal with is the eight astronauts they'll send to Mars, when there aren't supposed to be any at all. Frank - father, architect, murderer - is recruited for the mission to Mars with the promise of a better life, along with seven of his most notorious fellow inmates.

Implausible fun

Using convicts on Mars as expendable labor is not too much different from using slaves in the Americas, but the harsh reality is that the extreme environment makes it cheaper and better to use trained and willing labor. Once you get past the initial conceit, this story does a good job of describing the trip to Mars and the events there. The characters are given unique voices and are well written. The soulless corporations willing to hurt and kill others for profit are sadly believable. We’ll see if the future holds the exploitation of space or its exploration. I look forward to the next book in the series.
