Story
The most gorgeously theatrical of all Dickens's novels, Nicholas Nickleby follows the delightful adventures of a hearty young hero in 19th-century England. Nicholas, a gentleman's son fallen upon hard times, must set out to make his way in the world. His journey is accompanied by some of the most swaggering scoundrels and unforgettable eccentrics in Dickens's pantheon.

Interesting perspective on the laws of chance
Reviewed: 10-30-24
This isn't my normal genre, but I learned something from it regarding interpreting statistics and the laws of chance. It was a bit dry in places because of my lack of prior knowledge on the subject, but it presented an interesting history of mathematicians, and how theories of chance and statistics and investing have come about and hopefully how those theories can be applied to every day experiences.

I had never heard of Barnaby Rudge before, but wanted to try a new Dickens’ novel. I really enjoyed the plot of this book. It was long, but the characters definitely moved along and the story developed quickly and held my interest. I also learned about the Gordon riots in 1780; it was interesting to see how the mob mentality took over and created havoc. The narration was wonderful and each character definitely had their own voice.

When the Knight Bus crashes through the darkness and screeches to a halt in front of him, it's the start of another far from ordinary year at Hogwarts for Harry Potter. Sirius Black, escaped mass-murderer and follower of Lord Voldemort, is on the run - and they say he is coming after Harry. In his first ever Divination class, Professor Trelawney sees an omen of death in Harry's tea leaves... But perhaps most terrifying of all are the Dementors patrolling the school grounds, with their soul-sucking kiss...

The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby is closely modelled on the 18h-century novels that Charles Dickens loved as a child, such as Robinson Crusoe, in which the fortunes of a hero shape the plot. The likeable young Nicholas, left penniless on the death of his father, sets off in search of better prospects.

She never imagined that she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in and taking over her father’s beekeeping business. Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start.
