Ilea likes punching things. And eating. Unfortunately, there aren’t too many career options for hungry brawlers. Instead, the plan is to quit her crappy fast-food job, go to college, and become a fully functioning member of society. Essentially—a fate worse than death.

DING
Reviewed: 12-20-24
I couldnt get through it. It is the thing I hate the most about LitRPGs, the damn stat windows. And this author decided we needed an annoying DING every time he needed to exposition us to death.
Maybe there is a good story in here but I cant stand that pop ups. Other books that do it better have spoiled me.

More of a review of all available books so far
Reviewed: 04-05-24
I have burned through all 11 books. Getting the first couple for free because of amazon was a detriment to my wallet. I do think I liked the VA in the first two books more, and getting the new VA made the 4th book hard but it was worth getting used to.
It is nice to have a main character that doesn't always win, doesn't always get their way but still strives forward not letting the failures keep them down. It adds actual suspense to the events that take place, knowing they can go bad.
Looking forward to more of Joe's adventures. Will probably be picking up other Dakota Kraut books in the meantime

Decent story, middling performance

Story wasnt outside the norm, but was good. Only real downside was the voice acting. It was flat in a lot of places and really didnt convey enough emotion. But it wasnt so bad I couldnt listen to it.
I use books as background noise while I work, so im not always paying enough attention to notice the lack of emotion anyway.
if you do the same, I would recommend it.

Interesting, but it is the first book in a series so it is a lot of build up and world building/exposition. I will probably get the second book and continue listening.

The description of the fights was really well told. Daylen and Arric are a great combo and the story of guilt and redemption was something we desperately need to see more of now-a-days.
Got my parents to listen to some while on a long drive and my dad downloaded audible just to check out this book so that he could finish it.

For generations, nobles have gathered at a scenic estate once per year to compete. What transpires there is spoken of only in rumors, save for the prizes. Potent, powerful, and precious; the winners are said to receive a gift from magic itself. Reeling after their loss to Kalzidar, the adventurers from Maplebark can only press forward, following advice imparted by the gods. Their divine directions will lead them on a series of twisting paths, branching between old friends and new challenges, before ultimately pointing at a particular estate on a specific evening.

The anti-hero isnt done very well nowadays, but Drew did an amazing job at making these scoundrels just the right amount of bad while still being good. And the twists on all the childhood fairytales we learn of is interesting and unique.
My only complaint is that there is not more.
