Poorly Researched, Fear Driven and Confused

First off, the author is confusingly and outwardly equating Atheism to anything other than Judaism and Christianity. This book struggles to defend Judaism and Christianity by placing anyone who does not practice either, as an atheist. I am an atheist, meaning I do not believe in ANY versions of god, so naturally this title piqued my curiosity. I wanted to know how my non-belief in any of the 1000s of versions of god(s) out there would kill or harm anyone or anything. In the foreword according to Mr. Prager, there is no proof of god and goes on to explain the only way we could get to god would be through arguments. So now he is going to admittedly attempt to argue god into existence. Prager goes onto to quote so called agnostic Charles Krauthammer but in Krauthammer’s own words he does not believe in god. Listen to his interview with Bill Kristol on YouTube titled, “Charles Krauthammer on his distinguished career in writing and ideas” timestamp @1:37. Krauthammer has an atypical understanding of the label atheist. Atheist is someone who doesn’t believe in any god or gods. Krauthammer seems to oppose outspoken atheists and doesn’t find it satisfying when the answer to the origins of the universe as, the universe always was or came from nothing. I’ve never met or heard any atheist claim they believed the universe came from a literal nothing, or more accurately a void. Krauthammer goes onto say, “I am uncertain, and I’m surely uncertain about theism...”
KRAUTHAMMER: I don’t believe in God.
KRISTOL: “I don’t believe in God.” Right.
KRAUTHAMMER: Yeah.
Needless to say, this book misses the mark prior to even Chapter 1 by inaccurately citing a source and cherry-picking words and phrases. When I was a Christian, apologetics such as this was partly what led me to question theism in general. It was this constant misrepresentation of source material, the proud and careless use of logical fallacies and overall sloppiness in order to “defend” all the various beliefs in god(s) people felt the need to defend.
This book is written to instill fear, anger and paranoia within believers, the very people who largely hold their beliefs based on emotional ties to tradition and what their friends and family tell them about their religion and “the others.” Most theists do not ground their beliefs in studies, stats, expert consensus, consistency, and this author seems to prey on this weakness of his fellow believers. Anger and fear are a huge motivator, and this author exploits it well. Instead of trying to be charitable to atheists, it’s merely strawman after strawman, and he doesn’t care to look back and correct himself, especially when I’ve watched him in some interviews. I would recommend watching a few conversations Mr. Lurie had with a YouTuber by the name of TJump. Mr. Lurie did not seem concerned at all when it came to the details and sourcing offered when it was evident, he was spreading misinformation and this book highlights it well. In practically every single study and by every measure the MORE religious a society is, the LESS healthy that society tends to be. I would urge every believer to research those studies without invoking conspiracies to justify ignoring this reality.
Mr. Lurie works very hard to cast atheists in the most negative light possible. In his own words Mr. Lurie claims not believing in any of the various gods (being an atheist) therefore life offers nothing but emptiness and blackness, no hope, no laughter, no joy, no beauty, never innovated new technology, never inspired anyone, etc. This is according to which polls or studies? Of course, none. Mr. Lurie is intentionally creating a problem here; he creates a strawman to then turnaround and offer his dangerous and needless solutions. For nothing but a larger following and money. He complains about no prayer in schools because he’s ignoring all the various faiths this would include and ignores prayer happens all the time in private schools. In his fantasy world, only Judaism and Christianity equates to theism, and to boot these two faiths do not believe in the same god. Judaism does not believe god has a son!
Books such as this one are dangerous because they prey on ignorance which in-turn fuels anger and generates conspiracy theories since reality doesn’t align with what they were led to believe.
I’m just thankful I’m allowed to return this awful and hateful book and receive a refund.

I was excited to read this book because it sounded like it would be getting into the psychological and philosophical aspects of conspiracy nuts. When I hit the “Sacrifice” chapter I was wondering when the documentary on conspiracies would end. There were a few good chapters but overall I feel like this is a book should have been more accurately titled, “the stories of conspiracies and how they play out..”. Overall disappointing tho.

Would you try another book from Penn Jillette and/or Penn Jillette?

I think i would because he is entertaining.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

most interesting was the facts about his views of atheism and the least interesting was Penn going on and on about his ex-girlfriends and relationships.
