Publisher's summary

We humans rarely agree. We argue and debate, and nothing ever seems to be resolved. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could cut through the clutter and create consensus for your ideas and proposals? Of course it would. But to get there, you have to stop arguing and start asking questions.

In this audiobook, author and humanist Jennifer Hancock discusses recent research on how ideas are formed and changed to help you understand why and how to yield to your opponent. You'll learn how to turn the conversation around using Socratic questioning techniques to frame the underlying moral debate to your advantage.

This is the companion to the online course, “How to Win Arguments Without Arguing: Socratic Jujitsu”, created by Jennifer Hancock for Humanist Learning Systems. This audiobook contains the edited transcripts of the online lessons compiled for easy home reference.

The start of a thought

It has a basic premise but the idea is underdeveloped and hard for me to follow. What is Socratic reasoning? How do I apply this to my marriage? Is this just for debates? Concede and question seems simple but I find myself left wanting.

like Verbal Judo, but disappointing.

its not that the content isnt useful, but the sound quality was kinda shabby & it cut off the ending. it's worth the free credit. but it's also worth the return.

Too textbook-ish

i like the subject matter, and i like how she explained things, but i dont find myself prepared to go out and use this verbal jiu-jitsu. i expected some role playing, scenarios, or something more hands on.

Nothing beats the voice of experience.

Jennifer hits the nail on the head on so many levels. You can tell she is very well seasoned in critical thinking by her demeaner as she shares her techniques. Tis why I purchased 5 other of her audio books. Mind you I don't personally know her, this is all coming from listening to the other books' demos, reading her short biography, and finishing this audio book. She shares very well the variables at play when it comes to reasoning with others and how to react Socratically to help keep the interactions productive, sane, and logical. No filler material, she keeps the skills and reasoning we want to learn flowing from start to finish. I wish I had this skill 6 years ago when I went vegan for the animals, as I've had many heated debates since then and wished I had used the methods she teaches here. I probably would have been able to come across as a much more reasonable person for the benefit of all of us involved. This audio book fully teaches what it says it will. The skill of Socratic questioning is so important yet so rarely taught or even known of. Very highly recommended. Thank you, Jennifer, you are truly awesome! -Craig Deskins

Another great one by Jennifer Hancock

Very useful information. I’m going to use it the next meeting. I’ve already instinctively used some of the techniques and they work but I didn’t know why. I learned more insight and it was valuable. Thanks !

Not worth spending money.

She just describes what Socratic Questioning. Read the intro to Wikipedia and save your money. Sound quality terrible. This is like a single episode podcast, not a book. Check out Verbal Judo and Just Listen
