Story
Mary is a treacherous experiment. Her creator, an immortal named Doro, has molded the human race for generations, seeking out those with unusual talents like telepathy and breeding them into a new subrace of humans who obey his every command. The result is Mary: a young black woman living on the rough outskirts of Los Angeles in the 1970s, who has no idea how much power she will soon wield.

Classic Octavia Butler
Reviewed: 05-03-25
A compelling and satisfying end to the saga of Doro. I hope that you put all of Octavia Butler's books into audible, and I hope that you continue to use Robin Miles as the narrator. She is one of my favorite actresses on Audible to the point where I will select a book simply because she's reading it. and I'm always going to reach or listen to an Octavia Butler book.

Story
Whether it's fast cars or fast women, Stefano Ferraro gets what he wants. When he's not fodder for the paparazzi, he commands Ferraro family businesses - both legitimate and illegitimate. While their criminal activity is simply a rumor yet to be proven, no one knows the real truth. The Ferraros are a family of shadow riders capable of manipulating light and dark, an ability Stefano thought ran in his family alone - until now.

misunderstood genre
Reviewed: 03-31-25
I thought I was going to listen to a science fiction book about an interesting sub genre of people, those called the shadow riders. it wasn't my cup of tea. if you're into soft p*** you'll probably like it. they spent way too much time on the details. The main character of the book was so unsufferable in her low self-esteem that I almost gave up on her, but I wanted to see what would happen. the book could have probably been much shorter.

Story
In the slums of 18th-century France, Jean-Baptiste Grenouille is born with one sublime gift - an absolute sense of smell. As a boy, he lives to decipher the odors of Paris and apprentices himself to a prominent perfumer who teaches him the ancient art of mixing precious oils and herbs. But Grenouille's genius is such that he is not satisfied to stop there, and he becomes obsessed with capturing the smells of objects. Then one day, he catches a hint of a scent that will drive him on an ever-more-terrifying quest to create the "ultimate perfume" - the scent of a beautiful young virgin.

Beautiful, Brutal Story
Reviewed: 08-22-24
This book really brought to life the horrors that human beings can commit against one another. In so many different ways. There are so many warnings and lessons here about human behavior. The performances are all good, and the story was so engrossing that I was shocked when I looked up to realize I only had 4 minutes left in the story. I highly recommend.

I had I had a real hard time with the characters. There were literally no likable characters. Everybody had serious character flaws, so I found out that I couldn't root for anybody and therefore didn't really care about the outcome. It was mildly entertaining though.

Story
America’s backstory is a whitewashed mythology implanted in our collective memory. It should come as no surprise that the dominant narrative of American history is blighted with errors and oversights—after all, history books were written by white men with their perspectives at the forefront. It could even be said that the devaluation and erasure of the Black experience is as American as apple pie. In Black AF History, Michael Harriot presents a more accurate version of American history.

Her Truth is Riveting
Reviewed: 10-22-23
Jada's story is a redemption song. She has overcome incredible odds. There are thousands of beautiful, talented actresses out there but add addict parents, poverty and clinical depression to the mix and the odds against success are tripled. She did it and did it her way. People are strange and hate non-conformity, and she has had to deal with it. People love to hate on this woman and yeah, that's one of the prices you pay for fame and fortune, but if I admired her before I admire her a thousand times more after hearing her memoir in her own voice. She is clever, complicated, curious, a seeker, a problem solver, a mother and a best friend. She has also attained the kind of wisdom that most people won't ever attain, speaking on things like forgiveness. I'm glad I took the time to hear this. She has done it her way. You GO girl. Besides all of that the book is very well written; surprisingly so. She adds affirmations that you can challenge yourself with or not. It's entertaining and insightful.

Not my normal Genre
Reviewed: 10-18-23
The bodice-ripping type of story is not my normal genre, so I'm not sure how I stumbled upon this book. Dialogue like "everything male within him responded to everything female within her" eventually made me give up on the book and skip to the end to find out who did it. If you enjoy this type of book you would probably love it.
