It's rare to have a twisting and turning plot that is exciting. I wanted to know what happened to everybody and who did what when. Unexpected answers. Loved it!

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I can't really answer this without being insulting and I apologize in advance. This book aggravated me. First, it's aimed at women which isn't what bothers me. Someone who would read this book who lives in a dry county, naive, lives a sheltered life, conservative, very silly. The writing is fine and so is the narration, I just couldn't stand the content. Silly, silly book. I couldn't finish the book.

What was most disappointing about Pamela Fagan Hutchins’s story?

Emotional silly heroine who is weak and naive. I can't stand women who act like their reproductive organs are the center of the universe. Would the author stop having the heroine passing out and bleeding from her "girlie parts" please? It doesn't take a genius to reproduce. There is more to the world than babies, and marriage. It's a big world out there.. That and the heroine is just dumb! Since when do women lose 100 IQ points due to their reproductive hormones? How does she get up in the mornings without hurting herself? Same goes for her silly mother. Did I mention silly? She (the author and her heroine) put women back a hundred years. A lot of judgmental, nosy characters. One word -ADOPT.

What does Tracy Hundley bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I wouldn't even crack open the book. I obviously didn't look closely when I ordered the book. My bad. Serves me right for not taking the time to read the synopsis closer.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Annoyance and a waste of time. I didn't finish the book.

Any additional comments?

Do people like this actually exist in real life? I hope not. I do not mean to insult the author or the readers who love this book. I just didn't like the heroine and her boo hooing over her reproductive system. There are always options. Women are stronger and smarter then that.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

No. The author read her own book which would have been fine had she not tried to give her characters different voices. She made them sound like wimps, big dumb thugs (most of her male characters sounded like that) or just dumb. I didn't like the narration coming from the dog. Maybe the narration could have been handles some other way. It just bothered me. I do like how she came up for the name of the pets (read the epilogue to find out how she chose the names).

Would you be willing to try another book from Amy Shojai? Why or why not?

Yes. I'll read the next one instead. I would like to read her animal behavior books. I pet sit and would like to see how she does things. I get asked questions that I can sometimes answer but I am more of a cat person and all cats and dogs react differently to different things.

What aspect of Amy Shojai’s performance would you have changed?

Her character voices like when the old man is upset when he's contacting someone to save the main character. I really wanted to start yelling at him to stop being hysterical and get it together. The character voices were not my cup of tea as I have stated above. Her regular reading voice was totally fine.

Do you think Lost and Found needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

*spoiler alert* I can't say for sure. I can't get past the character voices. Truth is, most of the characters were not very likable. The babysitter, the sister, the radio station guy. Even the main character being characterized as a frump was not nice. She could have dressed in a nondescript way. Some of the bad guys were written perfectly evil (the shadow) but it was too easy for them to be evil to the good guys who were on the gullible side. If you keep the main character and the cop who turns up at the end with the mug, and leave the others out of it.

Hillerman did write other novels then just the Leaphorn and Chee series. It was exciting as expected. The technology was dated i.e. No cellphones and printed newspapers but still makes for a great read/listen!

What would have made Crossover better?

The reader read either too quickly and/or without enough inflection to the point that I zoned out. The story wasn't appealing. I must not have read the book summary closely. It's a story that I wouldn't have liked. Not my kind of sci fi.

Would you ever listen to anything by Joel Shepherd again?

No.

How could the performance have been better?

See above.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Crossover?

Stopped after 30 min. Couldn't answer that.

What made the experience of listening to Postcards from the Dead the most enjoyable?

It was an entertaining book to listen to that didn't require me to follow the plot closely i.e. I could listen to the book on my I pod while running errands and cleaning house.I wouldn't have picked Laura Childs scrap booking series if I didn't like listening to the books.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Didn't have a favorite character.

What about Danielle Ferland’s performance did you like?

She was the perfect person to read the book.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Laura Childs needs to learn a few key curse words to replace her all encompassing word "poop" which doesn't qualify as a curse word in my opinion. That's what you say in front of a kid instead of a real curse word.First time I heard it used in one her books, that made me laugh.

What made the experience of listening to Some Girls Bite the most enjoyable?

The narrator was good and the story was a fun one. Very enjoyable. Not so intense that it was hard to follow as an audible book. It made my long run more enjoyable.

What did you like best about this story?

The plot was fun, uncomplicated and interesting.

What does Cynthia Holloway bring to the story that you wouldn???t experience if you just read the book?

You can't read and run at the same time.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

No particular moment moved me but I enjoyed the interaction of the characters. I want to know what happens to them.

The Poisoner's Handbook

Overall
4 out of 5 stars

Reviewed: 08-17-10

Intersting lay man's book. On the one hand, it inspires me to look up more on the topic ie wood alcohol, and other types of alcohol. I never thought of prohibition and alcohol as poison before. I knew of prohibition but did not realize the extent people would go for a buzz. It was a good start but left me wanting more information. More indepth. I think there should be a suggested reading list at the end of the book and/or I would like to see another book if there isn't one already by the author that goes into more detail or more on the subject. It doesn't have to be about New York (I love New York) but I want more! Ms Blum peaked my interest, more please.
