About this listen

They killed me. They healed me. They changed me. Sure, the life of a graduate student wasn't exactly glamorous, but it was mine. I was doing fine until Chicago's vampires announced their existence to the world---and then a rogue vampire attacked me. But he only got a sip before he was scared away by another bloodsucker...and this one decided that the best way to save my life was to make me the walking undead. Turns out my savior was the master vampire of Cadogan House. Now I've traded sweating over my thesis for learning to fit in at a Hyde Park mansion full of vamps loyal to Ethan "Lord o' the Manor" Sullivan. Of course, as a tall, green-eyed, four-hundred-year-old vampire, he has centuries' worth of charm, but unfortunately he expects my gratitude---and servitude. Right. But my burgeoning powers (all of a sudden, I'm surprisingly handy with some serious weaponry), an inconvenient sunlight allergy, and Ethan's attitude are the least of my concerns. Someone's still out to get me. Is it the rogue vampire who bit me? A vamp from a rival House? An angry mob bearing torches? My initiation into Chicago's nightlife may be the first skirmish in a war---and there will be blood.

The Narrator BITES

Story is o.k.,alot like any other Vampire novel or movie that is out there. The Narrator kept the same tone in her voice with each character,I didn't feel that she gave them much individuality. Some times,it was even hard to follow, wondering WHO was actually supposed to be talking. There's either a lot of secrets being hidden or Ethen makes big decisions with out much thought. He didn't seem to have much faith in Merit but then goes & makes her this big time Sentinel.Who does that?So a bit unbelievable, with powers & choices made.Gradually coming into things & coming to under stand things, makes more sense.Over all,I enjoyed listening, would've liked it better just to have read the book though.

The first couple books are quite good... after not

The first books are fun and interesting, lots of adventure and snarky dialogue and some genuine character development. The character driven elements of the story stay consistently above average, Merrit's personal development and relationships with her family and friends remain the best part of the series through the 6th book where I finally gave up on the series.

Around book 3 the series starts to fall apart, as the focus shifts more towards politics and public relations. It quickly becomes clear the author doesn't know much about either. That would be fine if it weren't a constant reoccurring theme, badly written politics don't matter much if your over arching story is about adventure and personal exploration, but when you are writing a political romance drama it's fairly important to get that right.

The martial arts, military and security aspects of the story are laughably bad, very nearly nonsensical. I don't actually mind when authors get these parts wrong unless it's a major focus of the story. Up to the point I have read they haven't affected the story too much but I thought I'd mention it in case that's a breaking point for someone.

Great story, so-so reader. <br />

I love the Chicagoland vampire series. I recommend all of them. This reader is rather flat, very little excitement in her voice.

Great foundation for the series

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I did recommend this series. The situations are somewhat predictable but still entertaining. Chicago is an amazing setting. The political climate is true to life, imo.

What other book might you compare Some Girls Bite to and why?

Southern Vampire Mysteries. That's also about vampires living in the open in modern day society. The heroin has special abilities, as well.

What didn’t you like about Cynthia Holloway’s performance?

I find the narrators voice hypnotic and soothing. Unfortunately, she's not very good at transitioning from the characters.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Probably

Book 1

A good vampire series that blends mystery, suspense, and romance into an interesting story that keeps the audience actively listening.

Not comparable to Charlaine Harris’ books.

This is a fun read, but have moderate expectations. They do this author no favors by comparing her heroine to Sookie Stackhouse and Harper Connelly.
