Story
You’d never know what secrets the house on Hogarth Street holds - what’s happening, right this second, behind closed doors. An emerald-green front lawn. Perfectly trimmed hedging. An ivy-covered front gate and the scent of honeysuckle in the air. In the yard, two scooters lie on the grass. One blue, one pink, belonging to five-year-old twins.

The tension begins with the very first chapter. Love the technique of switching the character prospective from one chapter to the next. Just when you think the questions are going to be answered, the action switches to another character & the part they play in the story. Will definitely try another book from this author

He soon finds out that she was back in LA and back in the life.

Love the way this author's mind works!

We listed to The Gods of Guilt on a recent roadtrip. This is a great story, but I think the thing we enjoyed the most was the detailed narrative of every step of the preparation for trial, then the delivery of the case by the Defense to the Jury. How the legal mind works & why lawyers do the things they do was fascinating to us. A great read!

Story
The debut psychological thriller that will forever change the way you look at other people's lives. Every day the same. Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and night. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. Jess and Jason, she calls them. Their life - as she sees it - is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

Love the twists and turns

Would you listen to The Girl on the Train again? Why?
Maybe. The fun of the story was in not knowing what was going to happen next.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Just when you thought you had it figured out and knew "whodunnit", you changed your mind and suspected someone else. It was only toward the end you knew what was coming
Which scene was your favorite?
Spoiler Alert! When Rachel finally gets a backbone at the end of the book
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No
Any additional comments?
My favorite thing about this author is how she gets in Rachel's head. The reader can really feel her insecurities & how she feels when she's driven to drink. A great character study of an alcoholic

Heartwarming story

What did you love best about Top Dog?
Not only a great story about a wonderful dog, but an inside look at a truly unique relationship between handlers and their dogs. I had heard stories about service dogs, but I really enjoyed learning about what a valuable role they play in combat.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Lucca, of course!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I definitely cried any time one of the dogs was killed or injured, but when the handler climbed into the cage with Lucca to comfort her, that was probably what moved me most.
Any additional comments?
Don't pass on this one.

Story
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

Would you try another book from Donna Tartt and/or David Pittu?
No
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
Shorten it
What does David Pittu bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Great accents and character voices
Do you think The Goldfinch needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Maybe, but I don't have the patience to sit through so many words again
Any additional comments?
Donna Tartt has a wonderful way with words. Her descriptions and narratives are great, but I think it's very self-indulgent for her to expect a reader to spend so much time. 32 hours!
