A bunch of stupid women interfere in murder. Hackneyed. And calling a character “Partial Sue” is so irritating and unnecessary. Really disliked this, Mr. Borland.

Great story, great characters, great narration all add up to an unexpected pleasure. Sullivan Jones is a wonderfully talented reader.

The voices as written seem very authentic for the time, and the voices as read were easy to listen to. The story is lovely and full of characters that you would like to have met

Blah! A completely unappealing detective, an amorphous and underdeveloped perpetrator, absolute failure on all female characters. Not a good book.

Annoying narration, with every statement read as a question? Long rambling paeans to the joys of getting high on heroin? Maybe if I had had the patience to get to the murder-solving part of the book? Nah, couldn’t do it.

The book is about the effects of PTSD, grief in general, and the challenges of physical injuries on a strong and independent soldier. It happens to be about a woman but it could easily have had a male hero with almost no changes, which is a tribute to Mr. Quinn's skill as a writer and understanding as a human being. Scary, funny, poignant with simple language about complex situations.

The narration was absolutely five-star. Ms. Bennett uses voices and accents appropriately and without making you think about it too much. A flowing, easy-to-listen-to delivery, serious but not dull tone, and no weird quirks.

I love that a dog got involved eventually. I miss Chet.

I come from Pennsylvania's coal country and the landscape, economic problems and alcoholism are all authentic. The more current issues of meth and fracking are new to me but handled with a resignation and understanding that seems just right. The narrator reads beautifully without acting. Reminiscent of George Guidall's handling of the Longmire stories. Very good story; hope it's the first of many.

Has The Long Way Home turned you off from other books in this genre?

Only if there is a genre for navel-gazing repetitive books that a word-processor could have written by randomly choosing passages from other books by this author. This line is spent, move on!

Has The Devil's Workshop turned you off from other books in this genre?

No.

Would you be willing to try another one of John Curless’s performances?

Yes

Any additional comments?

This is more of a thriller and a horror story than a mystery. I simply do not want to spend more time with a filth-covered Jack the Ripper with no pants on. Yuck!
