Captivating and Intense
Reviewed: 10-05-24
This is a captivating tale, with such intensity it evokes a strong desire of wanting more. It is beautiful in expressing the passion, pain, and sorrow of both demon and prisoner. The world-building is phenomenal and the characters possess amazing depth. The narrator, Blanca Frappier, really brings the story and characters to life with her emotive sultry voice, adding the perfect inflections that express the cruelty, obsession, and sensuality this tale evokes.

Story
Rosie collapsed on the Seattle sidewalk, alone, cold, and drenched in seawater. Her head ached. Nothing seemed right. And her memory was little more than a fuzzy feeling of foreboding. Injured and weary, Rosie knows that if she doesn’t get help, she may not be able to piece together the reason she's in 2018. Her gut says it’s vital. But if she trusts anyone, it could forever alter the timeline. When tough, street-smart Carlos takes her under his wing…the adventure begins.

Absolutely Amazing Read/Listen
Reviewed: 09-01-24
I am so grateful to have stumbled upon this truly amazing tale. The creative combination of all my favorite sci-fi/fantasy subgenres; time travel, dystopia, and post-apocalyptic are so well crafted. The characters are endearing and deep, their individual stories evoking feelings of heartbreak, triumph, love, despair, and gratitude. This tale stirred so much excitement and tasty tension, with it's adventure and unexpected twists and turns, I was loathe to have it end and leave such a rich universe. But, in my greedy little heart, to learn the fate of these people who I came to love. Thank you so much, Penelope Wright, for this literary gift. I look forward to your your future (punny) creations.

Great Concept but Kind of Forgettable
Reviewed: 02-15-24
Like my review title says, this story is built on a great concept, but the plot was a bit thin. I admire the strong character building, the female lead, in particular being a badass. There is much that goes unexplained regarding the how and why of people living underground. The narration is fantastic, which I expect from Julia Whelan, who is a master narrator.

Story
The human race is all but extinct after a war with Partials - engineered organic beings identical to humans - has decimated the population. Reduced to only tens of thousands by RM, a weaponized virus to which only a fraction of humanity is immune, the survivors in North America have huddled together on Long Island while the Partials have mysteriously retreated. The threat of the Partials is still imminent, but, worse, no baby has been born immune to RM in more than a decade. Our time is running out.

Disappointing
Reviewed: 06-20-23
I'm typically a fan of Jacqueline Druga's work. However, I could not get past chapter 6 of this book. The lack of character development was particularly frustrating, and there was a huge missing in the creation of the world in which the story takes place. Frankly, I was bored, and that is truly sad for a zompoc story.

Story
Everyone is going to die. Soon. The whole of humanity sits on the precipice of total annihilation by plague. That’s some heavy shit right there. If 99 percent of the population dies, that leaves one percent grieving, scared, desperate, capable of anything, plunged into an apocalypse without laws, and no one to enforce them anyway, where there are no rules but one: might makes right.

Lots of Potential
Reviewed: 05-10-23
There is so much potential here. I think the characters have depth, but they lack direction and purpose. However, the main issue I have with this book is the length. It leaves the reader with a feeling of incompleteness, but not in a cliffhanger way. It just drops off without any resolution. I'm not sure if I'll read the next installment.

A Major Letdown
Reviewed: 11-16-22
I expect so much more from Jacqueline Druga. As a fan of her works, I am accustomed to far more character development as well as grouping storylines. This story was underwhelming and the characters bland. As the parent of an autistic son I appreciate the incorporation of a character on the spectrum, but found the character lacking depth.

Whether romantic or platonic, changing relationships prove tricky for Rose, Tom, Clara, and Craig—never mind adapting to the new not-so-normal. Being surrounded by the undead is bad enough, but with a tyrant-in-training running their Safe Zone, it’s that much worse.

Sarah never fails to create a world so immersive you feel as if you are are part of the story. The characters and their struggles to survive, to maintain their humanity, to rise to the occasion in their fight against a horrifying foe, are wonderfully complex and relatable. I'll revisit this story again and again.

Story
I stood by and let it happen for too long, but I will not do it anymore. I will not be the person who watches others get hurt and does nothing to stop it. Not anymore. Returning to Sovereign City after everything that was stolen from her is something Indra never thought she would do. Despite the scars she wears both inside and out, left there at the hands of the Sovereign and the Fortis, she is determined to save her people from oppression, even if it means putting her own safety at risk.

Gripping from start to finish
Reviewed: 07-22-21
This dystopian tale of bravery, loss, and transformation is powerful in it's otherworldly timelessness and it's relatability. Indra's journey of self-discovery, personal transformation, and firy desire to fight the wrongs of her world are written with such depth that I was immersed in the struggles, forceful determination, and dedication to fight against tyranny. I am on to book three.
