Story
Imperial commissar Ciaphas Cain returns to Nusquam Fundumentibus to crush the ork attacks which have been plaguing the frozen planet. But when his ship crashes into the wastelands outside the capital it disturbs a far greater enemy, one which has lain dormant under the permafrost since long before the Imperium came to this world and could now threaten the whole sector.

Hero of the Imperium
Reviewed: 12-19-22
It’s Commisar Ciaphas Cain and his loyal aide Jurgen tight-roping their way through more insurmountable odds.
The story is predictable, but that is their charm. The performance from the narrators is, as always, wonderful.

Good continuation that doesn’t move the needle
Reviewed: 05-30-19
Dark Imperium is awesome. This is clearly a bridge novel that doesn’t move the story forward but maybe a step or two (as far as the setting is concerned). Frater Mathieu may beg to differ but that is for you, the reader, to determine. I still recommend this novel as it is very entertaining, well written and well performed. Shame it has almost no consequence for any truly setting-important character.

IG lore doesn’t get better
Reviewed: 11-01-18
I binged this in 3 days. It’s incredible and Ciaphas Cain quickly becomes a beloved character in 40k. He is cowardly, self-serving, and puerile in every description of himself, yet he is a most capable tactician, keen to details of immediate self interest, experienced beyond reproach and truly among the IG’s greatest heroes. He just won’t admit it to himself.
This is the height of 40k lore, written and performed wonderfully. If you have any passing interest in 40k lore, you do yourself a great disservice not reading this book. No super soldiers, no bolter porn, just normal men and women of the Imperium whose belief in the Emperor is unwavering and truly form the bulwark against which all xeno and heretic scum find theirs waves of blasphemy crashing tragically against.

Story
After a long and gruelling conflict, the traitors at last close upon Terra. But time is dwindling for an attack. Both Guilliman and the Lion are returning with all haste, and their armies could turn the tide. The hosts of the Warmaster must unite, for only then can they attack the Throneworld itself. While Mortarion is sent on ahead as the fleet’s vanguard, it falls to Lorgar and Perturabo to marshal Fulgrim and Angron, both now elevated to daemonhood and perhaps beyond even the will of the Warmaster to command.

Well written book read wonderfully. A bit heavy on minutiae of combat but thrilling and with purpose.
