Great story-Reader’s voice wasn’t right for all characters
Reviewed: 07-08-24
I really like Harlan Coben’s novels. This was no exception. The main character in this book was supposed to be mid 30s I believe. However, the reader’s voice was the voice of a much older man. He did well on the other characters for the most part, but since a large part of the book was in the viewpoint of the main character, a younger voiced reader should have portrayed that character.

The last part of the story was the best

I did NOT like the heavy French accent of one of the readers (real or fake, I don’t know). It was difficult to understand at times and distracting at the very least. I did come to really like the two main characters.

Steven Weber makes it better

Although I think the storyline is a implausible (but aren’t most of Coben’s storylines), Steven’s portrayal of the different characters MAKES this book. SO good!

Unknown oppression in Romania in 70’s & 80’s

During the time I was watching Nadia Comaneci in the Olympics, I had no idea what living conditions were like in Romania. This book sheds light on conditions during that time. The revolution was in 1989.

Drifted too far away from subject

I found myself agreeing with other reviewers. I wanted to hear about Joy and her life (she is the person in the title, after all), even if that meant a shorter book. It started out like that and I was enjoying it…then it became about the author and her life, her experience, her boyfriend. And did Joy talk so much about God? The book even got into politics. I am enjoying reading about Joy on various websites now.

Story
Raymond Jaffe feels like he doesn’t belong. Not with his mother’s new family. Not as a weekend guest with his father and his father’s wife. Not at school, where he’s an outcast. After his best friend moves away, Raymond has only two real connections: to the feral cat he’s tamed and to a blind ninety-two-year-old woman in his building who’s introduced herself with a curious question: Have you seen Luis Velez?

The reader had an amazing range...from young to old...and different ethnic groups. The storyline was relevant to today’s times and attitudes.
