Call the canaries is a very nice first attempt at a novel. Just writing a novel must be a very hard undertaking but this one should’ve gone through a few more rewrites before it’s publication. The characters all work and have some real growth but the story lacks in certain areas. By reading the description of the book, one would think it’s a mystery about finding a lost sister…it really isn’t. I spent the entire time wondering if this would be tied up, and it is…very quickly and in the epilogue of the piece. The entire book felt like a high school bait and switch. I am forced to believe that it was published for the crowd (me included) that loved Where the Crawdads Sing. The title, timelines and characters all suggest that world.

However, the vocal performances were all very well done!!

Fun and poignant! Would highly recommend this to any and everyone. This story gives off 1984 feels and begs the reader/listener to continue. With dynamic characters and flawless storytelling Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah has developed a true American masterpiece.

Windhorst does an excellent job of sharing his knowledge, admiration and respect for James and his illustrious career. The book itself is a must read for not only the casual basketball fan, but those who look to better themselves. Lebrons journey is far from over and if we’re lucky, Windhorst will be there to guide us through it.
