Story
Woodrow Wilson Nickel, age 105, feels his life ebbing away. But when he learns giraffes are going extinct, he finds himself recalling the unforgettable experience he cannot take to his grave. It’s 1938. The Great Depression lingers. Hitler is threatening Europe, and world-weary Americans long for wonder. They find it in two giraffes who miraculously survive a hurricane while crossing the Atlantic. What follows is a twelve-day road trip in a custom truck to become Southern California’s first giraffes. Behind the wheel is the young Dust Bowl rowdy Woodrow.

I do not have words to describe the magnificence of this book. This beautifully crafted and lovely story should be read far and wide. And the narrator in the Audible version is pure perfection. This sweet loving tale captures pre-WWII America and includes some mighty fine adventures of two men, one old, one young, and one young red-headed woman moving two giraffes from NYC to San Diego. The three are bonded together in a deep transcendent way that "passeth all understanding." I will listen to this audio book many time. I love you Lynda Rutledge for the gift you have given me.

A Huge Disappointment
Reviewed: 01-29-22
Too long, too complex, too politically correct. I am not into wokeness. I read Elizabeth George for good mysteries and have read them all. This was not one of them.
I waited four years for this book. Ms George is now older and I hope she will wrap up this series before she and I both die.

Story
Now recuperated after the violent incident that cost him his arm - and nearly his life - DCS Serrailler has returned to work, though he prefers to spend his spare time sketching the medieval angels being restored on the cathedral roof. With crime rates down, Lafferton has been quiet, until one night when two men open their front door to a distressing scene. Serrailler makes a serious error of judgment when handling the incident, and the stress of this, combined with the ongoing trauma of losing his arm, takes its toll.

Perhaps the Best Book in the Series
Reviewed: 07-05-21
Does this book conclude the series? Perhaps. Without a doubt, the most touching and meaningful. Will read it again, just to escape into the reality of a complex family, struggling sometimes to deal with each other and their lives outside the family. Loved it.

Story
In a startling departure, James Lee Burke has written an epic story of love, hate and survival set against the tumultuous background of the Civil War and Reconstruction. At the center of the tale are James lee Burke's own ancestors, Robert Perry, who comes from the slave-owning family of wealth and privilege, and Willy Burke, born of Irish immigrants, a poor boy who is as irreverent as he is brave and decent. Despite personal and political conflicts, both men join the Confederate Army, determined not to back down.

WOW! A really fascinating book
Reviewed: 11-18-19
This book takes Nikki from her early life through her service at the UN. I cannot imagine how it could have been better. Her description of life as the Governor of South Carolina as well as her work with the United Nations, especially her trips to Africa, are so expressive of who she is as a human being. Her conclusions are full of common sense. I get to meet her tonight in Nashville. What a privilege for me!
(AND, she is an excellent narrator!)

Story
At the height of World War II, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, was home to 75,000 residents, consuming more electricity than New York City. But to most of the world, the town did not exist. Thousands of civilians - many of them young women from small towns across the South - were recruited to this secret city, enticed by solid wages and the promise of war-ending work. Kept very much in the dark, few would ever guess the true nature of the tasks they performed each day in the hulking factories in the middle of the Appalachian Mountains.
