About this listen

Serrailler must confront his demons as Lafferton experiences a series of shocking crimes in this 10th book in Susan Hill's shattering crime series.

Susan Hill stuns listeners once again in The Benefit of Hindsight, the 10th book in her celebrated mystery series.

Now recuperated after the violent incident that cost him his arm - and nearly his life - DCS Serrailler has returned to work, though he prefers to spend his spare time sketching the medieval angels being restored on the cathedral roof. With crime rates down, Lafferton has been quiet, until one night when two men open their front door to a distressing scene. Serrailler makes a serious error of judgment when handling the incident, and the stress of this, combined with the ongoing trauma of losing his arm, takes its toll.

In the tradition of the fabulous mysteries of Ruth Rendell and P. D. James, The Benefit of Hindsight is Susan Hill's best work yet - a chilling new addition to a highly acclaimed series.

This is not the finest of the series but it is head and shoulders above most of the mystery series
available. Susan Hill has created a world of relationship, family, duty and community. Finely honed
characters, complex plots, and very human responses make these books irresistible. This isn't just
about a crime being solved, but about human beings, their heartbreaks and how the human spirit
survives.

Very Good Serrailler story

I get frustrated with authors who can't keep track of details about their own characters. In one book Simon is 6'4". In another he's 6'2". In yet another he's 6'3".

One complaint

Does this book conclude the series? Perhaps. Without a doubt, the most touching and meaningful. Will read it again, just to escape into the reality of a complex family, struggling sometimes to deal with each other and their lives outside the family. Loved it.

Perhaps the Best Book in the Series

This was a much sadder story than I expected. Although I still enjoy d it, in my opinion the Author’s earlier works were better.

Sad story

What happened? The crime was never resolved. There were a bunch of red herrings; Maybe one is true. Disappointing that there’s no conclusion to the crime. The family as ever are the real story. Cat and her family; her practice; the village of Lafferton and Simon and his crew. Will miss this series.

Quality as usual but....

This series is so beautifully written… each one makes you attach more strongly to the characters

The narrator is perfect

I was so happy to see the latest Simon Serrailler novel by Susan Hill that I started listening right away. As always, Steven Pacey does a wonderful job narrating.

The story started great, but began to fall apart. The story lines seemed disjointed, and the ending just sort of dropped. I was surprised when the book ended since I felt I was only about 2/3 of the way through the book. I was expecting so much more, but was left with a pile of loose ends after an abrupt ending and characters that behaved in disjointed ways. It felt like a bunch of story ideas that were lumped together and never resolved.

A disappointment for this fan

Usually a series gets weaker as it goes along past 10, 11, 12. Not Simon Serrailer. I listened and read this latest, compulsively, enjoying every last word.

The Best Yet

No screaming tires or explosive action here; the Serraillier books are about what moves the characters as people. It has been a pleasant journey over the course of the series watching Simon and his family grow and change as characters and have an interesting mystery every time.

I hate it when either the author run out of things to say or the narrator changes. For this book the author ran out of things to say. None of the storylines were completed. I just don’t understand.

Ugh!!!! Not good at all
