Story
Michael Shermer presents an overarching review of conspiracy theories—who believes them and why, which ones are real, and what we should do about them. Trust in conspiracy theories, he writes, cuts across gender, age, race, income, education level, occupational status—and even political affiliation. One reason that people believe these conspiracies, Shermer argues, is that enough of them are real that we should be constructively conspiratorial. But Shermer reveals that other factors are also in play: anxiety and a sense of loss of control, as well as certain personality traits.

Many of the conspiracy cited stories are told elsewhere in greater detail. This book has a good overview.

Story
Mike Rinder’s parents began taking him to their local Scientology center when he was five years old. After high school, he signed a billion-year contract and was admitted into Scientology’s elite inner circle, the Sea Organization. Brought to founder L. Ron Hubbard’s yacht and promised training in Hubbard’s most advanced techniques, Rinder was instead put to work swabbing the decks. Still, Rinder bought into the doctrine that his personal comfort was secondary to the higher purpose of Hubbard’s world-saving mission.

This story is amazing. I can not believe that the organization has grown as much as it has with this much negative stuff. After watching LRH on some youtube videos you can kinda tell he is something else.

Story
A brilliant and utterly original thinker, Andrew Solomon's journey began from his experience of being the gay child of straight parents. He wondered how other families accommodate children who have a variety of differences: families of people who are deaf, who are dwarfs, who have Down syndrome, who have autism, who have schizophrenia, who have multiple severe disabilities, who are prodigies, who commit crimes, who are transgender.

I was assigned to read “Far from the Tree” in a Psychology class that I am taking for a BA degree in Psychology. This book is a great introduction to the many types of people we have in this world. I love Andrew Solomon’s witty style with tempered humor and seriousness. I will definitely share and listen again.

Wall Street is a racket! Amazing they are able to get away with it. With this book shearing light on the subject I think we will see change.
