Story
For more than 50 years, bizarre events at a remote Utah ranch have ranged from the perplexing to the wholly terrifying: vanishing and mutilated cattle, huge otherworldly creatures, invisible objects emitting magnetic fields, and more. For the family living at Skinwalker Ranch, life was under siege, and no one had been able to explain the horrors that surrounded them...But maybe science could. Leading a first-class team of research scientists, Colm Kelleher spent hundreds of days and nights on the Skinwalker property.

Fascinating claims
Reviewed: 02-24-25
Great and entertaining listen. Covers many of the strange occurrences claimed to have happened at SW Ranch, though no description is particularly long. Could definitely do with a larger book that logs all the claims in detail.

Story
Once again, David Sedaris brings together a collection of essays so uproariously funny and profoundly moving that his legions of fans will fall for him all over again. He tests the limits of love when Hugh lances a boil from his backside, and pushes the boundaries of laziness when, finding the water shut off in his house in Normandy, he looks to the water in a vase of fresh cut flowers to fill the coffee machine.

Master essayist, and this is his best so far
Reviewed: 06-14-24
Some of David Sedaris’ writing is very funny, but frankly, it is more poignant and telling of being a person than constant humor. This, to me, is even better. If you’re looking for straight humor, I think you may be disappointed. If you’re looking for humor and honesty, then this is for you.

Well-researched and engaging look at Caligula
Reviewed: 02-08-23
The idea that this book is stained by modernity is silly, as it's based in historical fact and primary sources. Some may find the closing chapter discussing Caligula and former president Donald Trump together out of place, but looking back at history and not attempting to place contemporary events alongside it is, as they say, risking history repeating itself.

Story
As a child, he was given his own suit of armor; at the age of 16, he helped defeat the French at Crecy. At Poitiers, in 1356, his victory over King John II of France forced the French into a humiliating surrender that marked the zenith of England's dominance in the Hundred Years War. As lord of Aquitaine, he ruled a vast swathe of territory across the west and southwest of France, holding a magnificent court at Bordeaux that mesmerized the brave but unruly Gascon nobility. He was Edward of Woodstock, eldest son of Edward III, and better known to posterity as "the Black Prince".

This book does a great job outlining the Prince's life and achievements, and also and also occasional failures and those poor decisions of Edward III. An excellent primer for the study of king Richard and take over by Henry Bollingbrook thereafter.

"Something is murdering my men." Thus reads the message received from a Nazi commander stationed in a small castle high in the remote Transylvanian Alps. Invisible and silent, the enemy selects one victim per night, leaving the bloodless and mutilated corpses behind to terrify its future victims. When an elite SS extermination squad is dispatched to solve the problem, the men find something that's both powerful and terrifying. Panicked, the Nazis bring in a local expert on folklore - who just happens to be Jewish - to shed some light on the mysterious happenings.

When the once-mighty city of Rome was sacked by barbarians in 410 and lay in ruins, it signaled the end of an era—and the beginning of a thousand years of profound transformation. In a gripping narrative bursting with big names—from St Augustine and Attila the Hun to the Prophet Muhammad and Eleanor of Aquitaine—Dan Jones charges through the history of the Middle Ages. Powers and Thrones takes listeners on a journey through an emerging Europe, the great capitals of late Antiquity, as well as the influential cities of the Islamic West.

Story
Rasputin separates fact from fiction to reveal the real life of one of history's most alluring figures. Drawing on a wealth of forgotten documents from archives in seven countries, Smith presents Rasputin in all his complexity - man of God, voice of peace, loyal subject, adulterer, drunkard. Rasputin is not just a definitive biography of an extraordinary and legendary man, but a fascinating portrait of the twilight of imperial Russia as it lurched toward catastrophe.

You get used to the narrator in short order; at least I did. This book does a great job of actually looking at records and historical evidence instead of repeating often erroneous legends about Rasputin, the Romanov's, and the surrounding players. Seems like the best of the subject.
