About this listen

As the birthplace of Judaism and Christianity, the Holy Land (the area in and around modern-day Israel) is one of the most important regions in the world and the setting for defining events in religious history.

Comb through this evidence for yourself with The Holy Land Revealed, which will add new dimensions to your understanding of this dynamic place. Delivered by archaeologist and award-winning Professor Jodi Magness of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, these 36 lectures give you an insider’s look at how archaeology helps us relive this period of civilization. And it’s a chance to get up close and personal with long-buried objects that will take you deep beneath the pages of the Bible.

Really fantastic.

I had pretty low expectations and was very pleasantly surprised. This is fascinating history and research without obvious religious or non-religious bias. She moves quickly and is very, VERY knowledgeable. I will look up more things to listen to authored by her.

Understanding the Hoy Land through Archeoogy

I chose this Great Course as preparation for my first trip to the Holy Land. I couldn't have found a better resource. Dr. Magness is a world-class scholar who manages to tell the story in an engaging, often humorous and very accessible way for the average person. She manages to make archeology highly interesting, too. Can't say enough positive about this course.

Fascinating and unbiased

Fantastic overview of the subject. Varied and engaging all the way through, including the overview of the archeologists' process at sites on the final section.

Excellent review of Holy Land's historicity

Excellent review of Holy Land's historicity (with a few shortcomings).

Professor Magness does an excellent job of focusing on the REGION of the "Holy Land" while allowing HISTORICAL FACTS (over many centuries) to flow in and out and all around the region of the "Holy Land" from other more distant world regions which definitively effected the HISTORICAL evolution of the region of the "Holy Land".

Consequently, one gets a clear picture of the "HOW, WHY, AND WHAT" of the HISTORICAL evolution of the region of the "Holy Land" over many centuries.

Unfortunately, pictures referenced in the lectures are NOT included in the provided PDF (a serious flaw which limits learning, especially since the referenced pictures provide information CRUCIAL to understanding what is being lectured).

Another somewhat annoying aspect is that the HISTORICITY flows very well and efficiently and cohesively for Lectures 1-20, but then Lectures 21-33 start to bog down and become somewhat disjointed (I still learned a lot, but the information did not feel well-integrated in toto). Fortunately, Lectures 34-36 are great.

Consequently, because of the cited shortcomings, I can only give this audiobook 3-4 stars instead of 5 stars (I flipped a coin and gave it 4 stars, but was strongly leaning toward 3 stars).

Great Lectures

I recently visited Jerusalem for the first time and these lectures are filling in a lot of information I wish I had during my trip. Will be very valuable for my next visit. Definitely recommend this audiobook for anybody remotely interested in the history of the Holy Land. Especially if you want to figure out fact from fiction.

A good history of the Holy Land

It was an overall view of the history of this part of the world that is important to 2 religious movements. it has left its imprint of Western Civilizations for the past 2000+ years.
