Story
Georgie York, once the costar of America's favorite television sitcom, has been publicly abandoned by her famous husband, her film career has tanked, her father is driving her crazy, and her public image as a spunky heroine is taking a serious beating. What should a down-on-her-luck actress do?

This was just ok for me, but if you are a big fan celebrity gossip and entertainment drama, you'll probably get a kick out of this book. I thought the reader did a very good job.

Story
In a world where "witches, vampires, werewolves, and shape-shifters live beside ordinary people" (Booklist), it takes a very unusual woman to call it home. By day, Mercy Thompson is a car mechanic in Eastern Washington. By night, she explores her preternatural side. As a shape-shifter with some unusual talents, Mercy's found herself maintaining a tenuous harmony between the human and the not-so- human on more than one occasion. This time she may get more than she bargained for.

Too much misery for Mercy. This book was a miserable ride.

Mixed....

This is a strong entry into the Mercy Thompson series, but the narration threw me....I usually love Lorelei King, and maybe I'm just too used to hearing her as Evanovich's Stephanie Plum, but her voice seems too light and upbeat for this series, and especially some of the subject matter in this story.

The third book in the Harper Connelly series, I think this one has the strongest mystery. It kept me guessing. It also has more romance than the previous books, which I enjoyed. Love the narrator.

Lots of fun

I've read the previous Plum books, but this is the first one I've gotten on audio, and it was really enjoyable. The narrator did a really good job. My main complaint of this series has been a lack of character growth, but it seemed a bit better this time. That quibble aside, if you've read the previous books, you know what to expect -enjoyable and fun with laugh out loud spots. Ranger fans will be pleased (go Ranger) and Morelli also plays a large part. Looking forward to fourteen.

It could have been better
Reviewed: 10-18-07
I'm a big Preston/Child fan, but this one was not a keeper. I kept thinking it could have been so much better if they had written this as two separate books - a Pendergast/ mystic /creature book and a separate "boat" book. Either would have been fantastic - combined they switched back and forth and really drew me out of the action until, exciting as the story was, I was just ready for it to end. The reader, however, gets an A+++.
