Story
Cassandra Tipp is dead...or is she? After all, the notorious recluse and eccentric best-selling novelist has always been prone to flights of fancy - everyone in town remembers the shocking events leading up to Cassie's infamous trial (she may have been acquitted, but the insanity defense only stretches so far). Cassandra Tipp has left behind no body - just her massive fortune and one final manuscript. Then again, there are enough bodies in her past.

This is one of the few times where I actually like the effect of the unreliable narrator. What's real? What's the truth? I'm still not sure exactly which version I believe.

Story
Authors June Hayward and Athena Liu were supposed to be twin rising stars: same year at Yale, same debut year in publishing. But Athena’s a cross-genre literary darling, and June didn’t even get a paperback release. Nobody wants stories about basic white girls, June thinks. So when June witnesses Athena’s death in a freak accident, she acts on impulse: she steals Athena’s just-finished masterpiece, an experimental novel about the unsung contributions of Chinese laborers to the British and French war efforts during World War I.

Even better than anticipated

I inhaled this. I started listening to it last night and basically only stopped to sleep. It was, indeed, "razor sharp," keeping me on the edge of my seat while also filling me with uncomfortable thoughts and feelings. (How can you find a character so repulsive and yet brace yourself in sympathy for their impending fall?) In terms of the performance, Helen Laser's excellent narration really brought out the POV attitude and voice. Heck, the Chinese words were mispronounced in the same way someone unfamiliar with and indifferent to Mandarin would interpret them (ghost or "gui" was pronounced "gwee"), which was brilliant if it was on purpose.

Story
They were the Princess Dianas of their day—perhaps the most photographed and talked about young royals of the early twentieth century. The four captivating Russian Grand Duchesses—Olga, Tatiana, Maria and Anastasia Romanov—were much admired for their happy dispositions, their looks, the clothes they wore and their privileged lifestyle. Over the years, the story of the four Romanov sisters and their tragic end in a basement at Ekaterinburg in 1918 has clouded our view of them, leading to a mass of sentimental and idealized hagiography.

I'm here mainly to BEG audiobook producers to train their narrators in pronunciation of the foreign words they'll be reading. Even just provide an accurate glossary with IPA transliteration, PLEASE. The Russian words and names were butchered.

Serj Tankian will be the first to admit that his band, System of a Down, was “unlikely a chart-topper as had ever existed in modern music history: a band of Armenian-Americans playing a practically unclassifiable clash of wildly aggressive metal riffs, unconventional tempo-twisting rhythms, and Armenian folk melodies, with me alternately growling, screaming, and crooning lyrics that could pivot from avant-garde silliness to raging socio-political rants in the space of a single line.” After all, as Serj concedes, “it’s not easy listening.”

Beautiful memoir, deeper than I expected
Reviewed: 05-18-24
I loved this memoir. It first caught my attention because I'm a fan of SOAD, but this is much more than a music bio. Serj Tankian also shares his experiences as an immigrant, an activist, and an artist. I will acknowledge that some awkward sentence breaks or pauses and mispronunciations could be mildly distracting at times, but I would never have anyone else narrate this other than Serj himself. It all added to the book's charm.

Story
The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

Dracula is one of my all-time favorite novels, and I loved this dramatic and varied audio version. Simon Vance’s narration was probably my favorite overall, but it was also a treat to hear Tim Curry as Van Helsing. Great casting.

When Dr. Louis Creed takes a new job and moves his family to the idyllic, rural town of Ludlow, Maine, this new beginning seems too good to be true. The narrator was awesome

This novel was absolutely horrifying, not just in the horror movie sense but also emotionally. I mean, you know what’s going to happen, but when it happens it’s still gut-wrenching. And the narrator made the experience so much richer, especially when voicing Jud. I highly recommend this audiobook! It’s just not for the faint of heart.

Depressing but illuminating
Reviewed: 06-22-21
I had to take breaks from this audiobook at times because it was just so disheartening to see how awfully people have acted throughout history and in recent history as well... But at the same time, I'm glad I stuck it out. It was very illuminating, and even when I disagreed with the author (such as on abortion and the motivations behind Catholic teachings) I respected his views. Everyone needs to know this ugly history and the ugly truth of the present.

I wasn't exactly looking for happy endings, but a decent payoff with questions answered would be nice. The worst is the very first story... wtaf even happened? I was so invested, and the ending was pointless.
