About this listen
You Let Me In delivers a stunning tale from debut author Camilla Bruce, combining the sinister domestic atmosphere of Gillian Flynn's Sharp Objects with the otherworldly thrills of Neil Gaiman's The Ocean at the End of the Lane.
Cassandra Tipp is dead...or is she?
After all, the notorious recluse and eccentric best-selling novelist has always been prone to flights of fancy - everyone in town remembers the shocking events leading up to Cassie's infamous trial (she may have been acquitted, but the insanity defense only stretches so far).
Cassandra Tipp has left behind no body - just her massive fortune and one final manuscript.
Then again, there are enough bodies in her past - her husband, Tommy Tipp, whose mysterious disembowelment has never been solved, and a few years later, the shocking murder-suicide of her father and brother.
Cassandra Tipp will tell you a story - but it will come with a terrible price. What really happened out there in the woods - and who has Cassie been protecting all along? Read on, if you dare....

Story
In the lands of Bethel, where the Prophet's word is law, Immanuelle Moore's very existence is blasphemy. Her mother's union with an outsider of a different race cast her once-proud family into disgrace, so Immanuelle does her best to worship the Father, follow Holy Protocol, and lead a life of submission, devotion, and absolute conformity, like all the other women in the settlement. But a mishap lures her into the forbidden Darkwood surrounding Bethel, where the first prophet once chased and killed four powerful witches.

Story
Mary is a quiet middle-aged woman doing her best to blend into the background. Unremarkable. Invisible. Unknown even to herself. But lately, things have been changing inside Mary. Along with the hot flashes and body aches, she can’t look in a mirror without passing out, and the voices in her head have been urging her to do unspeakable things. Fired from her job in New York, she moves back to her hometown hoping to reconnect with her past and inner self. What she finds instead are visions of terrifying mutilated specters that come with increasing regularity.

Story
You may think you know how the fairytale goes: a mermaid comes to shore and weds the prince. But what the fables forget is that mermaids have teeth. And now, her daughters have devoured the kingdom and burned it to ashes. On the run, the mermaid is joined by a mysterious plague doctor with a darkness of their own. Deep in the eerie, snow-crusted forest, the pair stumble upon a village of ageless children who thirst for blood, and the three “saints” who control them. The mermaid and her doctor must embrace the cruelest parts of their true nature if they hope to survive.

They whisper about her in Chicago. Men come to her with their hopes, their dreams - their fortunes. But no one sees them leave. No one sees them at all after they come to call on the Widow of La Porte. The good people of Indiana may have their suspicions, but if those fools knew what she'd given up, what was taken from her, how she'd suffered, surely they'd understand. Belle Gunness learned a long time ago that a woman has to make her own way in this world.

Story
Now reduced to a schoolyard chant, the Hope family murders shocked the Maine coast one bloody night in 1929. While most people assume seventeen-year-old Lenora was responsible, the police were never able to prove it. Other than her denial after the killings, she has never spoken publicly about that night, nor has she set foot outside Hope’s End, the cliffside mansion where the massacre occurred. It’s now 1983, and home-health aide Kit McDeere arrives at a decaying Hope’s End to care for Lenora after her previous nurse fled in the middle of the night.

Story
Deep in the heart of Appalachia stands a crooked farmhouse miles from any road. The Morrows keep to themselves, and it's served them well so far. When girls go missing off the side of the highway, the cops don't knock on their door. Which is a good thing, seeing what's buried in the Morrows' backyard. But 19-year-old Michael Morrow isn't like the rest of his family. He doesn't take pleasure in the screams that echo through the trees.

For the lucky among us, life is what you make of it, but for Dixie Wheeler, the theme music for her story was chosen by another long ago, on the day her father butchered her mother and brothers and then slashed a knife across his own throat. Only one-year-old Dixie was left alive, infamously known as Baby Blue for the song left playing in the aftermath of the slaughter. Twenty-five years later, Dixie is still desperate for a connection to the family she can’t remember, so when her childhood home goes up for sale, Dixie sets aside all reason and moves in.

Story
Two teenagers, a Greek Cypriot and a Turkish Cypriot, meet at a taverna on the island they both call home. In the taverna, hidden beneath garlands of garlic, chili peppers and creeping honeysuckle, Kostas and Defne grow in their forbidden love for each other. A fig tree stretches through a cavity in the roof, and this tree bears witness to their hushed, happy meetings and eventually, to their silent, surreptitious departures. The tree is there when war breaks out, when the capital is reduced to ashes and rubble, and when the teenagers vanish.

Here, gathered in one volume, are the stories that made Clarice a Brazilian legend. Originally a cloth edition of 86 stories, now we have 89 in all, covering her whole amazing career, from her teenage years to her deathbed. In these pages, we meet teenagers becoming aware of their sexual and artistic powers, humdrum housewives whose lives are shattered by unexpected epiphanies, old people who don't know what to do with themselves - and in their stories, Clarice takes us through their lives - and hers - and ours.

Unexpectedly haunting
I read the reviews, and was a little hesitant to give this title a try. But I’m pleased I did, though the writers words seemed to saccharine in some parts- after reflection they needed to be.
It is a horror story in someways, weaving the line between the supernatural and the possible ravings of a broken woman. The ending is conclusive but also leaves the listener unfulfilled, which isn’t a bad thing.
The only thing left to ask before listening to this title is-
Do you believe in fairies?

Dark, Sad and Beautifully told
For lovers of stories like Pan's Labyrinth, this is a dark fairy tale rooted in a chilling reality. I will definitely be checking out more by this author.

A tour of trauma
This book was a beautiful tour through the mind of an unreliable narrator and looking at the effects of childhood trauma (maybe). There were moments that made me go “oh…” I had originally began listening to this, thinking it was a horror novel (recommended from TikTok) but stayed for the poetic storytelling.

What is real??
I love how this book dealt with trauma and abuse. Through the first half I’m questioning if this is the real story of fiction or if it was the something else. Completely spellbinding and loved everything about it. The narrator was the perfect choice!

Fantastic
Excellent writing in a story that kept you engaged and on the edge of your seat the whole time. The narrator really brought this story to life! Keeps you guessing the whole time and leaves wondering what really happened

Good just not my cup of tea
The story was good. I liked the readers voice. Not monotone or boring like others I have listened to. When I read the review and saw supernatural thriller, I was thinking more demons and possession. Not a bad book by any means just not for me.

Every part of this story was hauntingly magical, whimsical in the most disturbing ways.
Holy shit I need about a million more books like this one!! This has been the most unique and intriguing experience ever given to me through a novel before!
Every part of this story was hauntingly magical, whimsical in the most disturbing ways. THIS is what I imagine when I ponder on what the “true” or “real” fairies would be like.
I will now be scouring the internet for more books like this one!!!
