Story
Anthony Trollope's classic novel centers on Mr. Harding, a clergyman of great personal integrity whose charitable income far exceeds the purpose for which it was intended. On discovering this, young John Bold turns his reforming zeal toward exposing what he regards as an abuse of privilege, despite the fact that he is in love with Mr. Harding's daughter, Eleanor.

Dull

I’m not sure if the story is dull or the narrator made it feel that way. I am new to Trollope and have enjoyed other books (read by a different narrator- Timothy West) immensely.

Story
Two years ago, a hostile Prime Minister launched the Monochrome inquiry, investigating "historical over-reaching" by the British Secret Service “to investigate historical over-reaching.” Monochrome’s mission was to ferret out any hint of misconduct by any MI5 officer—and allowed Griselda Fleet and Malcolm Kyle, the two civil servants seconded to the project, unfettered access to any and all confidential information in the Service archives in order to do so. But MI5’s formidable First Desk did not become Britain’s top spy by accident, and she has successfully thwarted the inquiry at every turn.

Over-written, too slow
Reviewed: 10-04-23
Author feels compelled to embellish every sentence with “clever” descriptive language. Painfully slow. Reader was fine, and the ending was good but I barely made it.

I never fully appreciated this novel before until I heard this reading. I’ve listened to a lot of audiobooks, and this is one of the best. Anthony Heald does a brilliant job of capturing people teetering on insanity.

I did not love this. There was very little explanation of what we were doing, or why we were doing it. I felt like Alexa or Siri was leading the lessons. And one of the native speakers sounded like she was trying out for a Telenovela. If you really want to learn Spanish, try the Paul Noble series. Not only will you learn a lot but you will understand what you are doing.

With his slow, low-stakes approach, Paul Noble makes you feel so relaxed and confident that you find yourself learning and remembering things you never could if you had actually worked hard at it. By the end of this course, I felt very comfortable using quite a wide range of vocabulary, quite a wide range of tenses, and I’m anxious to try out my new skills. If I could give this course 10 stars, I would.

Jack Torrance's new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he'll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote...and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.

Kind of bloated

The problem with books on tape is that you can’t very easily skip the boring parts. It was well read, but there was just way too much of it. Steven King needs a good editor. It gave me a lot more respect for what Kubrick did with the movie - distilling it down to its elements.

Story
One of the 20th century's enduring works, One Hundred Years of Solitude is a widely beloved and acclaimed novel known throughout the world and the ultimate achievement in a Nobel Prize-winning career. The novel tells the story of the rise and fall of the mythical town of Macondo through the history of the Buendía family. Rich and brilliant, it is a chronicle of life, death, and the tragicomedy of humankind. In the beautiful, ridiculous, and tawdry story of the Buendía family, one sees all of humanity, just as in the history, myths, growth, and decay of Macondo, one sees all of Latin America.

The man known as Cheradenine Zakalwe was one of Special Circumstances' foremost agents, changing the destiny of planets to suit the Culture through intrigue, dirty tricks, and military action. The woman known as Diziet Sma had plucked him from obscurity and pushed him toward his present eminence, but despite all their dealings she did not know him as well as she thought. The drone known as Skaffen-Amtiskaw knew both of these people. It had once saved the woman's life by massacring her attackers in a particularly bloody manner. It believed the man to be a lost cause.
